Chapter 4 - The Secret in the Gym

The next three months were a brutal, exhausting war of wills.
Isabella moved into a beautiful suite in the East Wing of the estate. Every morning at 6:00 a.m., she met Alessio in the massive, state-of-the-art private gym on the ground floor.
She quickly realized that Alessio’s greatest enemy wasn't his injury; it was his own fury. He wanted to run before he could walk. He would push himself until his face turned purple, his muscles trembling, only to collapse back into his chair, cursing in fluent, venomous Italian.
"Get out!" he roared one Tuesday morning, throwing a heavy leather medicine ball across the room. It shattered a mirror against the wall. "It’s useless! My leg is a dead piece of meat!"
The guards at the door flinched, but Isabella didn't even blink. She was standing by the parallel bars, holding a warm towel and a bottle of water. She walked over to the shattered mirror, carefully stepped over the glass, and picked up the medicine ball.
"Are you done throwing your tantrum, Don Moretti?" she asked, her tone entirely conversational.
"I am the head of the Moretti family!" he snarled, his chest heaving under his sweat-soaked shirt. "I do not take insults from a girl from Queens!"
"And I don't take orders from a man who acts like a toddler when he has a bad day," Isabella shot back, walking right up to his wheelchair. She leaned down, bringing her face inches from his. "You didn't fail today because your leg is dead. You failed because you tried to lift forty pounds with your quadricep before we built up the stabilizing tendons in your ankle. You are impatient, Alessio. And your impatience is keeping you in that chair."
Alessio’s eyes blazed. He reached out, his massive hand snapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. The proximity was sudden, suffocating, and intensely electric. Isabella could feel the raw heat of his body, the hard muscle of his chest, and the frantic beating of his heart.
"You think you're safe because I need you?" he whispered, his breath hot against her ear. "I could have you thrown into the ocean by sunset."
Isabella didn't pull away. She looked directly into his storm-grey eyes, her own breathing shallow but steady. "You could. But then you’d have to find someone else who isn't afraid of your yelling, someone who actually believes you can walk again. And we both know those doctors you hire only tell you what you want to hear because they're terrified of you."
She placed her hands gently on his broad shoulders. Her touch was soft, but there was an undeniable strength in her grip. "I'm not afraid of you, Alessio. I see a man who fought his way to the top of the world, but is too proud to admit he needs a hand to take the last step. Let go of my waist, and let's try the parallel bars again. Five minutes. That's all I ask."
Alessio stared at her full, beautiful lips, then up at her dark, fierce eyes. The anger in him slowly melted, replaced by a profound, intoxicating fascination. This woman wasn't like the fragile, superficial models his cousins brought around. She was solid, real, brilliant, and completely unyielding.
He slowly released his grip on her waist, his fingers lingering on the soft curve of her hip for a fraction of a second.
"Five minutes, Bella," he murmured, using her nickname for the first time. "But if I fall, you're catching me."
"I always do," she said softly.
By the end of the fourth month, the miracle happened.
Isabella had designed a completely new brace—lighter, made of carbon fiber and flexible silicone rings that expanded with muscle movement. She had hand-stitched the inner leather lining herself to ensure no nerves were pinched.
They were alone in the gym late at night. The only sound was the rain beating against the high glass windows. Alessio was gripped onto the parallel bars. Isabella stood at the far end, about six feet away.
"Now, Alessio," she said, her heart in her throat. "Don't look at your feet. Look at me. Focus on the heat we felt last week. Send the signal to your right big toe. Press down."
Alessio grunted, his face pale with concentration. The muscles in his neck strained. For a long, terrifying moment, nothing happened.
Then, his right foot shifted forward.
It wasn't a smooth step. It was clumsy, heavy, and dragging—but it was a step. He lifted his foot off the ground entirely by his own power and planted it six inches forward.
"Bella..." he gasped, his eyes wide with an emotion Isabella had never seen in him before: pure, unadulterated awe.
"Again," she whispered, tears springing to her eyes. "Look at me, Alessio. One more."
He took another step. Then another. By the fourth step, his balance wavered. The parallel bars shook. He lost his grip and began to fall forward.
Isabella lunged forward. She didn't care about the danger or his size. She threw her body into his, catching his massive frame against hers. They went down together, landing hard on the thick rubber gym mats.
Alessio landed on top of her, his heavy body pinning her to the floor. But he didn't move to get up. He was breathing heavily, his face buried in the crook of her neck. Isabella could feel his chest rising and falling against her breasts.
"I walked," he whispered against her skin, his voice trembling. "I walked, Bella."
"I told you you would," she cried softly, wrapping her arms around his broad back, holding him tight.
Alessio lifted his head. He looked down at her, his face inches from hers. The professional barrier that had stood between them for months shattered into dust. He looked at her round, flushed cheeks, her dark eyes filled with tears of joy for him, and he realized that this woman had given him back his life.
He leaned down and kissed her.
May you like
It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was possessive, fierce, and filled with a desperate, deeply rooted hunger. Isabella groaned softly, her hands moving into his dark hair, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the storm of passion that had been building between them for months.
When he finally broke the kiss, he rested his forehead against hers. "You are my miracle, Isabella Romano. And I am never letting you go."
