Chapter 5 - The Queen’s GambitBy sunrise, the Bellandi dynasty was nothing more than a historical footnote in New Jersey crime reports.

The front page of The Star-Ledger blazoned a massive headline: MID-ATLANTIC EMPIRE CRUMBLES: FEDERAL RAID STRIKES BELLANDI SYNDICATE FOLLOWING MASSIVE FINANCIAL AUDIT.

Inside the Tribeca loft, morning sunlight streamed through the tall warehouse windows, illuminating rows of screens displaying financial restructuring charts and legal documents.

Claire sat at her mahogany desk, wearing a crisp white blouse and tailored charcoal trousers, reviewing the final asset-transfer manifests.

Mara walked in carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a thick manila folder.

“Federal marshals raided the New Jersey estate at 6:00 a.m.,” Mara reported, placing the folder on the desk. “Dominic wasn’t there. He and Vanessa tried to flee toward the Pennsylvania border in his private vehicle, but highway patrol intercepted them near Morristown. He’s currently in federal custody, facing thirty counts of racketeering, tax evasion, and international smuggling.”

Claire didn’t look up from her paperwork. “And Evelyn?”

“Evelyn chose to remain at the estate’s guest house. She sent a message for you.” Mara slid a small, sealed envelope across the desk.

Claire picked it up, slipping her letter opener beneath the flap. Inside was a handwritten note in Evelyn’s sharp, elegant cursive:

Claire, My son was a fool who inherited my stubbornness without my intelligence. You built a kingdom from dust, and he treated it like a sandbox. I hope you burn what is left of his legacy to the ground. You have my absolute blessing. — Evelyn

Claire folded the letter and placed it neatly inside her desk drawer.

“What about the Marlowe Group?” Claire asked.

“Julian Marlowe has been trying to secure a meeting with you since 7:00 a.m.,” Mara smiled brightly. “He realized very quickly that the shipping consortium needs Carter Advisory far more than we need them. He’s waiting in the conference room downstairs.”

Claire stood up, smoothing the front of her trousers. A faint, victorious smile touched the corners of her lips.

“Tell Mr. Marlowe I’ll see him in five minutes,” Claire said.

She walked over to the full-length mirror near the window, adjusting the cuffs of her sleeves. For fifteen years, the world had known her as Mrs. Dominic Bellandi—a shadow standing behind a powerful man.

Now, looking at her reflection, she saw the truth.
