Chapter 6 - The True Father's Legacy

The rain had turned into a full-scale hurricane, whipping the ocean waves into a frenzy against the cliffs behind the estate.
Leo ran through the dark, winding corridors of the east wing, his heart hammering against his ribs. The backup generator hummed weakly, casting long, eerie shadows across the marble floors.
"Noah! Lily! Maya!" Leo roared, his voice hoarse.
He slid around a corner and gasped. Marcus, the scarred security chief, was slumped against the wall of the panic room, clutching a bloody wound in his shoulder.
"They... they had the bypass codes," Marcus gasped, coughing up blood. "Julian... he had the master key. Arthur took the children. They're heading to the private helipad on the cliff."
Leo didn't waste a single second. He sprinted toward the glass doors that led to the cliffs. Behind him, Victoria ran to his side, her high heels discarded, her bare feet bleeding on the cold stone, but her face filled with an identical, desperate determination.
They burst out into the storm.
The wind nearly knocked them off their feet. Fifty yards away, on the edge of the sheer cliff overlooking the roaring ocean, a private helicopter’s rotors were spinning, cutting through the heavy fog.
Arthur Vance was dragging the four quadruplets and Noah toward the open cabin door. The children were crying, their voices drowned out by the roar of the helicopter engine.
"Arthur!" Leo roared, sprinting across the wet grass.
Arthur turned, pulling a heavy black pistol from his coat. He aimed it directly at Leo’s chest. "One more step, carpenter, and I start dropping them off the cliff!"
Leo stopped, his body shielding Victoria behind him. The rain soaked through his clothes, but he felt nothing but a burning, white-hot focus.
"Let the kids go, Arthur," Leo said, his voice carrying over the wind. "This is between you and Victoria. They have nothing to do with this."
"They have everything to do with this!" Julian Vance’s voice sneered from the shadows of the helipad. He stepped out, holding a briefcase filled with bearer bonds. "With the children in our custody, we control the trust fund. Victoria’s voting rights are ours. We win, Leo. A simple carpenter like you never stood a chance against an empire."
Arthur smiled, raising the gun to fire. "Goodbye, Mr. Bennett."
But Arthur had made one fatal mistake.
He had forgotten about the children.
Noah, remembering the "dinosaur defense" Leo had taught him when playing in the living room, suddenly sank his teeth deep into Arthur’s wrist.
Arthur screamed in pain, dropping the gun.
At the exact same moment, Lily, Maya, Chloe, and Sophia grabbed Arthur’s legs, throwing their entire weight against him. The sudden distraction gave Leo the split second he needed.
Leo lunged forward like a striking cobra. He tackled Arthur to the ground, his fist connecting with Arthur’s jaw in a brutal, bone-shattering strike. They rolled across the wet grass, dangerously close to the edge of the cliff.
Julian panicked, grabbing the briefcase and running toward the helicopter. But Victoria was already there. With a cry of pure, maternal fury, she tackled her brother-in-law into the mud, smashing a heavy decorative stone from the garden pathway directly into his temple, knocking him unconscious.
On the edge of the cliff, Arthur managed to get on top of Leo, his hands wrapping around Leo’s throat, cutting off his air.
"You... are... nothing!" Arthur hissed, his eyes crazed with desperation. "I am a Vance! I built this city!"
Leo felt his vision beginning to blur. But then he looked past Arthur's shoulder and saw Noah and the quadruplets, huddled together in the rain, crying out for him.
“Daddy! Please, Daddy!”
The word didn't just give Leo strength—it gave him a power that defied his exhausted body.
With a roar that sounded like a wounded lion, Leo brought his knee up, striking Arthur in the spine. As Arthur’s grip loosened, Leo grabbed Arthur by the collar, twisted his body, and slammed him face-first into the mud, pinning him down with his knee.
"You didn't build this city, Arthur," Leo gasped, his chest heaving as he stared down at the defeated man. "And you sure as hell didn't build this family."
Within minutes, the sirens of the state police echoed up the driveway.
Julian and Arthur were loaded into the back of separate police cruisers, their corporate empire shattered, their crimes of kidnapping, faking a death, and corporate fraud laid bare to the world.
ONE YEAR LATER...The Bellamy Café was warm and dry. The rain outside was soft, tapping gently against the glass windows.
At the back table, beside the radiator that had finally been repaired, Leo sat with a cup of hot black tea.
But he wasn't alone.
Sitting around the table were four seven-year-old girls, laughing and coloring a giant picture of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Next to them sat Noah, proudly showing Lily how to make a paper airplane.
And sitting right next to Leo, her hand resting warmly and naturally inside his, was Victoria.
The ice queen had melted. She wore a simple, soft sweater, her hair falling naturally around her smiling face. The contract of convenience had expired six months ago, but neither of them had ever mentioned the word "divorce."
"Daddy?" Lily asked, looking up from her drawing with her big, serious blue-gray eyes.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Leo smiled.
"Can we go to the park after this? Mama said we can play in the mud if you promise to clean us up."
Leo looked at Victoria, who gave him a rare, beautiful wink.
"Only if we get chocolate croissants first," Leo laughed, pulling his real daughters and his son close to him.

The game of pretend was over.
And the real family had finally begun.
