Chapter 10 - THE QUEEN'S REIGNTwo years later.

Chicago, Illinois.

The main conference room of the Moretti Tower in downtown Chicago was packed with fifty business executives, city officials, union leaders, and legal representatives.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Lydia Moretti.

She looked breathtakingly powerful. She wore a custom-tailored dark plum pantsuit that accentuated her plush curves, a three-strand pearl necklace, and her dark hair styled in sleek, royal waves.

On her left sat Lorenzo, wearing a sharp black suit, his arms crossed over his broad chest, looking at his wife not like a boss, but like a proud guardian knight watching his sovereign rule.

On her right stood Mateo.

He wasn't sitting in a wheelchair.

He was standing on his own two feet, leaning lightly on an elegant gold-headed cane, wearing a tailored three-piece suit, his posture straight, his eyes bright with life and health.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Lydia announced, her voice calm, clear, and carrying total authority across the silent board room. "The Moretti Foundation has officially acquired the South Side Industrial Port. We are investing two hundred million dollars to build three new green logistics hubs, providing four thousand union jobs to local residents."

The room erupted into enthusiastic applause. Union leaders shook hands, city officials smiled for the press cameras, and executives signed the final legal deeds.

The mob was gone. The violence was gone. In its place stood an empire of legitimate wealth, community development, and unassailable power.

As the meeting cleared out, Mateo walked over to Lydia, wrapping his arm around her shoulders, giving her a gentle hug.

"You did it, sister," Mateo smiled, his voice strong and clear. "From maid to the most powerful CEO in Chicago."

"We did it, Mateo," Lydia corrected gently, adjusting his lapel pin. "How are your legs holding up today?"

"I walked two miles this morning," Mateo beamed. "Dr. Vance says I can drop the cane by Christmas."

"Just don't try running any marathons yet," Lorenzo teased, walking over and wrapping his arms around Lydia’s waist, pulling her back against his broad chest. "I still need someone to handle the wine inventory at the estate."

Mateo laughed, waving his hand as he walked out of the boardroom to meet his physical therapy team. "I'll leave you two lovebirds alone!"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked shut, leaving Lorenzo and Lydia alone in the sunlit penthouse room overlooking the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

Lorenzo turned her around in his arms, his hands coming to rest on her waist—and then sliding gently down to her stomach, where a soft, round bump was clearly visible beneath her plum jacket.

Lorenzo’s expression melted into pure, overwhelming tenderness as his large hand gently cupped her belly.

"How is our little Don doing today?" Lorenzo whispered, bowing his head to press a gentle kiss against her abdomen through the fabric of her suit.

Lydia smiled, her fingers tangling into his dark hair, tears of pure happiness welling in her eyes. "He's kicking, Lorenzo. I think he's complaining about the two-hour board meeting."

Lorenzo stood up, his hazel eyes shining with a love so fierce it took her breath away. He framed her face in his hands, his thumb gently wiping away a tear of joy from her cheek.

"Three years ago," Lorenzo murmured, his voice shaking with deep emotion, "I was watching a camera screen in an SUV, waiting for my world to end. I thought my family was cursed. I thought my brother was dead. And then... a soft, brave woman walked into the frame with folded towels, and she changed everything."

Lydia leaned up on her tiptoes, pressing her lips softly against his.

"I didn't walk into that room to change your world, Enzo," she whispered against his lips. "I just walked in to do my job."

Lorenzo laughed—a deep, beautiful sound that echoed through the top floor of his empire.

"And you gave me a life, Lydia," Lorenzo whispered, pulling her into a tight, eternal embrace as the midday sun bathed them in golden light. "You gave me everything."
