Chapter 4 - THE SILK AND THE STEELThe victory at the Drake Hotel sent shockwaves through the Midwest criminal underworld, but inside the Moretti estate, the air was thicker than ever.

It was 2:00 AM.

The estate was on level-one lockdown. Extra guards patrolled the iron perimeter, their heavy boots crunching against the fresh snow.

In the master suite, Lydia stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the frozen gardens. She had unzipped the emerald velvet dress, letting it fall to her feet, leaving her in a simple, supportive lace corset and silk shorts. Her plush, soft hips, full thighs, and warm, golden skin were fully exposed in the dim moonlight.

She was applying an antiseptic salve to her injured shoulder in front of the vanity mirror, wincing slightly as the cotton swab touched the fresh black stitches.

The bathroom door opened.

Lorenzo stepped out wearing only a pair of dark grey lounge pants, his bare torso covered in jagged scars, intricate Italian tattoos, and broad, dense muscle. He held a glass of dark bourbon in one hand.

He stopped dead in his tracks when his eyes landed on her.

Lydia caught his gaze in the mirror. She instinctively reached for her robe to cover her full curves—a habit developed over years of being judged by society’s ridiculous beauty standards.

"Don't," Lorenzo said softly.

His voice was a command, but it held a gentleness that made her hand freeze on the satin robe.

Lorenzo set his glass down on the nightstand and walked slowly across the plush carpet until he was standing directly behind her. He didn't look at her injuries first. He looked at her reflection—at her round, stunning hips, her generous bust, her full lips, and the fierce intelligence shining in her dark eyes.

"You are trying to hide," Lorenzo whispered, his large, warm hands coming to rest on her soft hips, his thumbs lightly tracing the gentle curve of her waist.

Lydia’s breath hitched. "I'm not used to... people looking at me like this, Lorenzo. In your world, the women are built like twig models. They spend thousands on surgery to erase every curve. I'm... I'm twice their size."

Lorenzo’s grip on her hips tightened—not to hurt her, but to ground her. He pulled her body back until her soft, warm buttocks pressed firmly against the hard line of his thighs.

"Those women are glass, Lydia," Lorenzo murmured, his face dropping into the curve of her neck, his warm breath sending goosebumps cascading down her arms. "They break when the wind blows. They shatter when real life touches them. You..." He turned her around in his arms so she was forced to look directly into his blazing hazel eyes. "...you are marble. You are rich, beautiful, soft where a man needs comfort, and unbreakable where a man needs strength."

He raised his hand, taking the cotton swab from her trembling fingers.

"Let me," he whispered.

Lorenzo gently dipped a fresh cotton pad into the antiseptic. With incredible, painstaking care, the feared Don of Chicago—a man whose hands had ended dozens of lives—gently cleaned the wound on her shoulder. His touch was so light, so reverent, it brought unexpected tears to Lydia’s eyes.

"Why are you doing this, Lorenzo?" she asked softly, her dark eyes searching his face. "The play at the gala is over. Silvano is finished. You don't have to keep pretending when we're alone."

Lorenzo stopped. He set the cotton pad down, his hands framing her soft, full face, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear from her cheek.

"Do you think I was pretending tonight?" he asked, his voice raw and gravelly. "When I dropped to my knees in the snow? When I kissed you in front of those cameras? You think that was an act?"

"Wasn't it?" she asked, her heart pounding violently against her ribs.

"I watched you fight a killer for my brother on a six-inch screen, Lydia," Lorenzo confessed, his voice dropping into a raspy, intense frequency. "I watched you risk your life for a man who couldn't give you anything in return. I have spent thirty years surrounded by people who only love my money, my power, or my name. You loved my brother's life enough to die for it. I fell in love with you before my car even reached the gates."

Lydia froze. "In love? Lorenzo, we've known each other for ten days—"

"Ten days or ten years, it makes no difference," Lorenzo interrupted, his lips pressing firmly against hers.

This kiss wasn't like the one at the red carpet. It wasn't for the press. It wasn't a declaration of war. It was slow, deep, possessive, and thick with an overwhelming hunger that made Lydia’s mind spin. She opened her mouth to him, her fingers tangling into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer until there was no air left between them.

Lorenzo lifted her effortlessly, his hands cradling her soft, heavy thighs, placing her gently onto the edge of the high mahogany bed.

"You are my wife, Lydia," Lorenzo growled against her throat as his hand slid up her plush thigh, sending lightning bolts through her blood. "Not because of a contract. Not because of the Commission. Because my soul belongs to you."

Before Lydia could surrender completely to the dark fire consuming them both, the estate's emergency alarm shattered the night air.

WAI-WAI-WAI-WAI!

Red strobe lights flashed across the bedroom ceiling.

Lorenzo instantly broke away, his hand sweeping to the nightstand, drawing his silver Beretta in a split second.

The door to the master suite slammed open. Marco stood there, his tactical vest torn, blood dripping from his arm.

"Boss!" Marco shouted over the blaring siren. "It's not the Lucchesi! It's the Russians! Federal agents just breached the front gates with an arrest warrant—and they brought Viktor Sokolov with them!"

Lorenzo’s jaw set into iron. "Sokolov? The head of the Brighton Beach Bratva?"

"They aren't here to search the house, Don Moretti," Marco rasped, his face pale as death. "Sokolov brought fifty heavy mercenaries. They claim they have a federal order to seize Don Mateo as an international material witness!"

Lydia sat up on the bed, her dark eyes wide with terror as the reality settled in.

They weren't coming for Lorenzo's empire anymore. They were coming to take the paralyzed twin into federal custody—where a single 'accidental' heart attack would end the Moretti bloodline forever.
