Chapter 9 - PROMISES KEPTTwo weeks later, the private airstrip in Accra, Ghana, shimmered under the blazing African sun.

The Gulfstream touched down smoothly on the tarmac, its turbine engines winding down with a soft whistle. The door swung open, and Nia Boateng descended the staircase, holding tightly to the small, warm hand of her four-year-old daughter, who was chattering excitedly about toys and home.

Waiting at the base of the stairs was a crowd of cheering family members—a grandmother weeping tears of joy, aunts and cousins rushing forward to engulf Nia and the little girl in a sea of embraces, singing and praising God in Twi and English.

Nia looked back up toward the aircraft door.

Standing in the shadows of the doorway were Min-jae, Eun-ji, and little Yuna.

Yuna waved enthusiastically, holding up a small beaded bracelet Nia had given her in Seoul. Nia smiled through her tears, placing her hand over her heart and bowing her head in a silent, profound gesture of gratitude.

Min-jae raised two fingers to the brim of his coat in a silent salute, while Eun-ji smiled warmly, stepping back into the cabin as the crew prepared for the return flight to Seoul.

The door closed. The jet taxied back toward the runway.

Nia stood on her native soil, surrounded by the family she thought she would never see again, holding her daughter close against her chest. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and looked at the screen.

A single text message from an unknown international number:

“The debt is paid. The account is closed. Welcome home, Mama.”

Nia smiled, wiped a stray tear from her cheek, and turned toward her family, finally stepping into a future where the shadows could no longer reach her.
