Chapter 2 - THE QUIET EVACUATIONEvery drop of military discipline I had spent years cultivating in the Army surged through my veins, freezing my emotions into a razor-sharp, calculated stillness.

I didn't kick the door open. I didn't scream, smash windows, or start a screaming match on the front lawn. That was what amateurs did. I was a captain in military logistics; I assessed terrain, secured my assets, and executed extractions with absolute precision.

My primary asset was sitting on the porch, shivering.

I slipped off my heavy Army-issue winter jacket and wrapped it around Piper’s small frame, swallowing the hot rage tearing at my throat. Her little arms instantly slid through the oversized sleeves, her fingers gripping the collar.

“Mommy,” she mumbled into my chest. “My backpack has Teddy’s blanket.”

“We’ll take it,” I said softly, picking up her pink backpack from the railing.

I looked through the window one last time. Colin was pouring two glasses of wine, leaning in to kiss the woman—Chloe—on the cheek. He had my house, my furniture, my savings, and my life. What he didn't realize was that he didn't own a single square inch of the property.

The house, the deed, the mortgage, and the bank accounts were entirely in my name, purchased with the inheritance left by my late grandfather before Colin and I were even married. Colin had contributed exactly zero dollars to the down payment. He was just a guest riding on my coattails—and his lease had just expired.

I turned around, scooped Piper into my arms, grabbed my duffel bag, and walked down the driveway without making a sound.
