Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS COLLAPSES“Thirty minutes?!” Chloe shrieked, dropping her coffee mug onto the hardwood floor, where it shattered into a hundred jagged pieces, sending brown liquid splattering across the pristine white baseboards. “You can’t just throw us out into the snow! It’s freezing! We have nowhere to go!”

“That’s funny,” I remarked, walking slowly toward the living room and picking up Chloe’s glittering white stocking from the mantel. “That’s almost word-for-word what my three-year-old daughter said yesterday when you locked her outside.”

I tossed the stocking directly into the fireplace ash bucket.

Colin rushed forward, his hands trembling as he shoved the eviction notice back toward Major Vance. “This is illegal! I’m her husband! I have marital rights to this residence! I’m calling my lawyer right now!”

“Go ahead,” I said, pulling out my phone and dialing speakerphone. “Call him. In fact, let me save you the trouble.”

I pressed speaker and handed the phone to Colin. A tired, professional voice answered immediately.

“This is attorney Harrison’s office. Who is this?”

“Mr. Harrison, this is Captain Sarah Vey,” I announced clearly. “I am currently standing in my primary residence with my legal counsel and military police witnesses. My husband, Colin Hayes, is attempting to claim marital property rights over a pre-marital asset. Furthermore, I am filing an immediate petition for expedited divorce on grounds of abandonment, child endangerment, and asset dissipation.”

There was a long, suffocating pause on the other end of the line.

“Mr. Hayes…” Mr. Harrison sighed heavily. “Did you or did you not sign the pre-marital real estate waiver relinquishing all claims to the Colorado Springs property prior to your wedding in 2022?”

Colin went completely rigid. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He had signed it. Blindly, arrogantly, assuming he would never need it.

“If you have been served with an eviction notice by Captain Vey,” the lawyer continued coldly, “my professional advice is to pack your bags immediately and do not speak another word without legal representation. Good day, sir.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.
