Chapter 4 - The Whispering Gallery

Word Count: ~3,500 words

Three hours later, Daniel sat in the dark interior of an abandoned grain silo thirty miles west of the farm. He had disconnected the battery of the military transceiver, stopping the ping, but he knew they would trace his last known location soon.

He used a burner phone he kept in his glovebox to dial the number from the journal.

It rang three times. A woman's voice answered, sharp and devoid of emotion. "Who is this?"

"My name is Daniel Carter," he said. "William Harper is dead. He left me his farm. And I just dug up his backyard."

There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line. Daniel could hear the faint sound of keyboard typing in the background.

"Are you alone?" she asked.

"Me and my dog. And a bunch of guys in black SUVs who tried to turn us into Swiss cheese."

"They are Apex Solutions," the woman said, her tone shifting from cold to deeply urgent. "They are a private intelligence firm contracted by elements within the Defense Intelligence Agency. William was their lead accountant. My name is Sophia. I was William’s handler before he went rogue."

"He wasn't rogue," Daniel said, his voice tightening. "He was trying to protect something."

"He was trying to protect you, Daniel," Sophia said. "Do you know what is in that glass vial inside the case?"

Daniel looked down at the small glass tube of dried blood resting on the truck’s tailgate. "Looks like old blood."

"It’s your blood, Daniel. From the military hospital in Germany after your deployment in Syria."

Daniel froze. "Why would William have my blood?"

"Because you didn't just save him that day, Daniel. You were the only survivor of a highly classified medical experiment conducted by Apex under the guise of 'combat enhancement therapy.' They were testing a synthetic neurological stabilizer designed to prevent PTSD in active-duty operators. But it had a fatal flaw. It caused acute hemorrhagic fever in 99% of the subjects. Everyone in your unit died from 'combat wounds.' Except you."

The truth hit Daniel like a physical blow. The nightmares. The constant state of high-alert. The physical pain that never went away. It wasn't just the psychological trauma of war. It was the physical manifestation of a chemical agent running through his veins.

"William found out," Sophia continued. "He couldn't save your unit, but he saved you. He stole your medical records, the data ledger, and the only remaining sample of your untainted, post-exposure blood—which contains the active antibodies that make you immune. That vial is worth tens of millions to pharmaceutical companies and defense contractors looking to weaponize or sell the stabilizer."

"So the farm..." Daniel whispered, the pieces finally falling into place.

"The farm was a hiding place. William knew that if he kept you close, under the radar, Apex wouldn't look for you. But if they ever found the cache, you would have the tools to destroy them. The ledger contains the names of every high-ranking official who authorized the project."

"Where do we go?" Daniel asked.

May you like

"Meet me at the old railroad yard in Topeka," Sophia said. "We can upload the ledger to a secure international server. Once it’s public, Apex won't have any reason to kill you. It’ll be over."

Daniel stared at the vial of his own blood. "I’m on my way."
