Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail of a Ghost

The silence that followed was heavy enough to suffocate. Grant’s chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow gasps, his eyes darting frantically between Celeste, the forensic accountant, and the damning spreadsheets spread across the mahogany.

“This is an invasion of privacy,” Victoria hissed, though the steel in her voice was beginning to crack. She slammed her palm against the table. “You have no right to audit private family accounts! Grant is a senior vice president of this company; he has every right to allocate resources as he sees fit!”

“Not when those resources belong to a protected trust that bypasses corporate executive discretion entirely,” the forensic accountant spoke for the first time. His name was Julian Vance, a man known in New York financial circles as the corporate grim reaper. He adjusted his glasses, sliding a thick ledger directly into Victoria’s line of sight. “Over the past thirty-six months, exactly twelve point four million dollars has been siphoned from Hart Meridian’s patent development funds. Where did it go, Mrs. Caldwell? Shall we read the wire receipts? Tribeca penthouse lease: paid in full by Hart Meridian corporate accounts. Exotic European vacations under ‘client acquisition’: paid by Hart Meridian. Even Miss Vale’s boutique medical bills and designer wardrobe are currently itemized under corporate software R&D.”

Madison let out a sharp gasp, pulling her hand away from her stomach as if the silk blouse she wore had suddenly caught fire. “Grant! You said that money was yours! You told me your father left you an independent trust separate from the company!”

“Shut up, Madison,” Grant snapped, his face contorting into an ugly snarl. The mask of the polished, untouchable Greenwich elite was completely shattered. He lunged across the table toward the briefcase, his fingers clawing for the ledger, but Julian was faster, snapping the metal locks shut with a sharp click.

“Ah-ah, Mr. Caldwell,” Celeste warned, her hand resting calmly on top of the briefcase. “Tampering with active legal evidence is a felony. And considering these documents are already synced to the Manhattan District Attorney’s financial crimes division via cloud relay, I wouldn’t recommend adding obstruction of justice to your growing list of charges.”

The color drained entirely from Grant’s face. He stumbled backward, his knees hitting his chair and knocking it over onto the marble floor with a deafening crash. The irony was poetic; just minutes earlier, he had pushed divorce papers across that exact table, expecting me to crumble. Now, the ground beneath his feet was dissolving into quicksand.

“Evie,” Grant choked out, his voice dropping into a desperate, pathetic plea as he rounded the table toward me. He reached out, his fingers trembling as he tried to grab my wrist—the exact same gesture he used to use when he wanted me to play the compliant, submissive wife at his mother’s endless society galas. “Evie, please. Let’s not lose our minds here. We can talk about this. In private. Just you and me. We’ve been married for four years; surely we can work out a settlement that doesn’t involve—”

I didn’t flinch. I didn’t pull away with drama or disgust. I simply looked down at his hand hovering over my wrist, then raised my eyes to meet his.

“Don’t touch me, Grant,” I whispered. “You called me Evie because you thought it made me small. But Evie died the moment you brought your mistress to my seat. My name is Evelyn Hart-Memorial, and you’re about to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping giant.”

Victoria stood frozen, her mouth slightly open, realizing for the first time in her life that her last name, her mansion, and her unearned prestige couldn't save her golden boy from the legal hurricane bearing down on them.
