Chapter 2 - THE PAPERWORK OF REVENGE

The shockwave of Liam's innocent question rattled through the high-society crowd like a tremor. Senator Robert Hastings, standing in the front row beside his wife, immediately narrowed his eyes at Ethan.
"What did the child just say?" Senator Hastings demanded, his boombox voice instantly drawing every camera phone that had been secretly recording the scene. "Ethan, what is the meaning of this? You told my family your ex-wife was an unstable gold-digger who ran away with another man! You never said anything about triplets!"
"Senator, please, allow us to explain—" Eleanor stammered, her regal composure completely collapsing for the first time in her life. She glared at me with pure hatred. "Claire is a liar! She is an opportunistic fraud trying to ruin this union!"
"A fraud?" I let out a light, elegant laugh that sent a shiver down Ethan’s spine.
I gestured to Marcus. He immediately opened a sleek black leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of pristine, legal documents stamped with the seal of the Supreme Court of Illinois and the Financial Conduct Authority.
"Five years ago, Eleanor," I said, stepping closer to the grand altar, "you forced Ethan to sign our divorce papers while I was hospitalized with severe morning sickness. You offered me a five-thousand-dollar settlement and threatened to ruin my reputation if I didn't sign and leave Chicago forever. You told me I was nothing, that I would starve in the gutters, and that the Montgomery name would erase me."
Ethan took a step toward me, his hand reaching out instinctively. "Claire... I didn't know... my mother told me you took the money and left! She told me you aborted the baby!"
"Liars always protect each other until the light shines on them," I said, looking Ethan dead in the eye. The pain he saw in my eyes wasn't heartbreak anymore; it was cold, refined power. "I didn't take your blood money, Ethan. I took my children, moved into a two-room basement apartment, and built Vance Digital Global from the ground up."
The moment the name of my company left my mouth, several CEOs in the front row gasped aloud.
"Vance Digital?" whispered Arthur Pendelton, the chairman of Chicago’s largest private equity firm. "She’s C.V. Vance? The anonymous tech mogul who just acquired a forty percent stake in Midwestern Banking Corporation?"
"Yes, Arthur," I turned to him with a polite nod. "I am C.V. Vance. And as of 9:00 AM yesterday morning, when Montgomery Holdings failed to liquidate their margin debt with Midwestern Bank, my firm assumed ownership of all underlying collateral."
I looked back at Eleanor, whose face was now entirely devoid of color.
"Which brings me back to this estate," I continued smoothly. "The Lake Geneva property was put up as collateral for Ethan’s failed real estate venture in Dubai six months ago. The bank called the loan yesterday. I bought it. Eleanor, you, your son, and your guests are currently squatting on my private land."
Caroline Hastings shrieked in anger, tearing her veil from her hair and throwing it onto the rose-covered aisle. "Ethan! Is this true?! Are your family's assets compromised?! Is your company broke?!"
"Caroline, darling, wait!" Ethan panicked, turning to his bride, then turning back to me, his mind clearly spinning in utter chaos. "Claire, please! This is my wedding day! How could you do this to me? To us?!"
"You abandoned your children before they took their first breath, Ethan," I said, my tone as sharp as a diamond blade. "You let your mother treat me like garbage because I didn't come from money. You wanted a spectacle today? You wanted me to watch you marry into power?"

I looked down at my three boys. Caleb smiled up at me, giving my fingers a little squeeze.
"I didn't come here to ruin your wedding, Ethan," I smiled, a dark, satisfying triumph washing over me. "I came to show my sons the exact moment their mother took back everything your family tried to steal from them. Now... you have five minutes to clear these grounds before my security team files a formal order for illegal trespass."
