Chapter 6 - THE TRAP AT THE GATES

The storm roared through Lake Geneva at 6:00 AM the following morning.
Eleanor Montgomery arrived at my Lake Forest estate in a sleek black Maybach, accompanied by two private security SUVs. She wore a dark mink coat, her face restored to its usual icy arrogance. She believed she had won. She believed Judge Harrison’s emergency order was in her purse, granting her full custody of the three boys who represented the future of the Montgomery bloodline.
Ethan was in the passenger seat beside her, looking pale, tired, and deeply conflicted.
"Mother, is this really necessary?" Ethan pleaded, his voice hollow. "Taking the boys away from Claire by force... this is insane. We can talk to her, work out a visitation schedule—"
"Silence, Ethan!" Eleanor snapped, fixing her lipstick in the mirror. "That woman humiliated us! She stole our property, destroyed your marriage to Senator Hastings' daughter, and brought down our stock! Those boys are Montgomerys. They belong in our family, raised with proper values, not by a ruthless, low-class tech usurper! Today, we take back control."
entered through the open iron gates of the Lake Forest estate. The Maybach pulled up to the front of the massive brick mansion.
Eleanor stepped out into the rain, holding a leather folder containing what she believed was the signed court order. "Security, secure the perimeter!" she commanded her men. "Ethan, come with me!"
They marched up the grand stone steps to the front doors. Eleanor didn't knock. She signaled her head security officer to breach the lock.
But before the guard could touch the door handle, the massive double doors swung open on their own.
Standing in the grand foyer was not a frightened Claire Vance.
It was a wall of federal agents wearing dark blue jackets with yellow capital letters across their backs: FBI.
Eleanor froze on the welcome mat. Ethan gasped, stepping back.
Special Agent David Vance (no relation to my adopted surname) stepped forward, holding a federal arrest warrant.
"Eleanor Montgomery?" Agent Vance asked calmly over the sound of thunder.
"What... what is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor demanded, backing up, her mink coat soaking in the rain. "I am a private citizen! I have a court order signed by Judge Harrison to retrieve my grandsons!"
"Judge Harrison was arrested three hours ago at his residence for judicial corruption, bribery, and treason," Agent Vance replied sternly. "And as for you, Mrs. Montgomery... you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, witness intimidation, attempted child abduction, and conspiracy."
"What?!" Eleanor screamed, her voice breaking into an unhinged screech. "You can't arrest me! Do you know who I am?! I am Eleanor Montgomery! I own this city!"
"You owned it yesterday, Eleanor," my voice echoed from the top of the grand interior staircase.
I walked slowly down the stairs, dressed in an immaculate white suit, looking down at her. Behind me, sitting safely on the top landing with Marcus, were Liam, Noah, and Caleb, watching the drama unfold with quiet, protected curiosity.
"You tried to buy a judge to steal my children," I said, coming to a stop at the threshold. "You tried to destroy my life five years ago. But you made one fatal flaw, Eleanor."
"You... you set me up!" Eleanor choked out, rain dripping down her pristine hair as two female FBI agents grabbed her arms and snapped cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. "Ethan! Do something! Call our lawyers! Ethan!"
Ethan didn't move.
He stood in the rain, looking up at me, then looking at his mother being handcuffed. The illusion of his mother’s invincibility had been shattered forever.
"Ethan..." Eleanor begged, her voice high and desperate as she was dragged toward a police cruiser. "Ethan, help me!"
May you like
Ethan looked at his mother, then looked at the wrists bound in steel.
"No, Mother," Ethan said softly, his voice trembling with years of repressed resentment. "You built this house of cards. Now you get to watch it fall."
