Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Price

"You just don't know when to die, do you, kid?" Silvio snarled, his face twisted in desperate rage. He had been hiding on the ship all along, ensuring the execution went through.
The timer on Elena’s screen read: 00:22.
"Silvio, the boat is rigged! Your own bombs are going to kill you!" Mia screamed.
"If I go down, the Valtieri name dies with me!" Silvio roared, leveling the shotgun.
BANG.
A shot echoed across the marina. But it didn't come from Silvio’s shotgun. And it didn't come from Roman’s gun.
Silvio gasped, dropping his weapon as a neat bullet hole appeared in the center of his chest. He stumbled backward, falling into the fiery engine room below.
Roman looked across the distance. Standing on the edge of the pier, holding Roman’s discarded sniper rifle with trembling hands, was Elena. Her shoulder was bruised from the recoil, but her gaze was steady. The secretary who had never handled anything heavier than a stapler had just saved his life.
"Roman! Jump!" Elena screamed.
00:05.
Roman grabbed Mia, locking his arms around her, and dove off the side of the yacht into the freezing, deep waters of the marina.
00:01.
The yacht exploded in a massive, blinding fireball. The shockwave shattered the windows of the SUV and threw Elena to her knees on the wooden dock. The heat scorched her face as she crawled to the edge, desperately staring into the burning, debris-strewn water.
"Roman!" she shrieked, her voice tearing. "Mia!"
The seconds ticked by like agonizing hours. The water was black, covered in burning oil.
Then, two heads broke the surface.
Roman was gasping for air, holding a conscious but coughing Mia above the water. Elena let out a broken sob, tears finally spilling freely as she helped pull them both up onto the wooden planks of the dock.
An hour later, the sirens were wailing in the distance, but the police would find nothing but ash and empty shells. The Valtieri clean-up crew had already arrived, securing the perimeter.
Mia was wrapped in blankets inside an ambulance, safe and stable.
Roman stood at the edge of the dock, his wet clothes clinging to his bruised and bloodied frame. Elena stood next to him, silent, looking out at the smoking ruins of the ship.
"You shot him," Roman said quietly, breaking the silence.
"He was going to kill you," Elena replied simply, not looking at him. "I couldn't let that happen."
Roman turned to face her. The distance that had existed between them for three years was entirely gone, burned away in the fires of Pier 19. He reached out, his large, scarred hand sliding into her hair, forcing her to look up into his eyes.
"You’re not my secretary anymore, Elena," he murmured, his voice thick with an emotion he had spent a lifetime suppressing. "You're the only person in this world I trust. And you're never leaving my side."
Elena looked into the eyes of the city's most feared mafia boss and smiled a small, tired smile. "I have a lot of demands for my new contract, Mr. Valtieri."
"Call me Roman," he whispered, before leaning down and pulling her into a fierce, possessive kiss, sealing a new, unbreakable alliance written in blood and survival.
THE TWIST ENDINGThree days later. The Marcone family had been dismantled, Silvio was dead, and Roman’s rule over the city was absolute.
Elena sat in her newly renovated office at the top of the Valtieri Tower. Her phone vibrated.
Not her business phone.
A brand new, encrypted black phone that Roman had given her.
She answered it. "Speak."
A smooth, sophisticated female voice echoed on the other line. "The asset performed exactly as expected, Ms. Marsh. Roman Valtieri has completely eliminated his own inner circle, destroyed his rival family, and handed you absolute access to his global accounts. The syndicate is yours to control from the shadows."
Elena looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching Roman walk into the boardroom across the hall, entirely unaware that his fierce, loyal secretary was actually the undercover high-ranking operative of the global syndicate that had engineered the entire war to place her on his throne.
Elena smiled, her eyes turning cold and calculated.

"Everything went perfectly," Elena whispered into the phone. "He thinks he protected me. He has no idea I’m the one pulling his strings now."
She hung up the phone, picked up a fresh cup of black coffee, and walked into his meeting, the perfect secretary once again.
