Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne flutes, and expensive tuxedos. Over five hundred of the state’s wealthiest and most influential citizens had gathered to celebrate the Vance Family Foundation.
Arthur stood at the center of the room, looking like royalty. He held a crystal glass of scotch, his arm wrapped tightly around his mother’s shoulders. Margaret looked radiant, her chest adorned with a new, even larger diamond necklace. They had won. The scandal had been buried, Eleanor was thoroughly discredited, and the baby was safe in their mansion under the care of high-priced nannies.
“A toast,” a wealthy real estate mogul said, raising his glass to Arthur. “To the man who holds the hearts of our community in his hands. Congratulations on the Lifetime Achievement Award, Arthur.”
“Thank you,” Arthur said, his smile flawless and charismatic. “I only do what I can to serve humanity.”
The chimes rang throughout the ballroom, signaling it was time for the presentation. The crowd moved to their tables, and the lights dimmed. A massive projection screen descended behind the main stage.
The master of ceremonies took the microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we honor a visionary. A man whose surgical precision is matched only by his dedication to ethics and family. Please welcome to the stage, the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Arthur Vance!”
The room erupted into thunderous applause. Arthur stood up, adjusting his silk bow tie, and walked up the steps to the stage. He stood behind the podium, basking in the standing ovation, looking out over the crowd of people who worshiped his talent.
“Thank you, everyone,” Arthur began, his voice amplified by the state-of-the-art sound system. “When I look out at this room, I see the future of medicine. A future built on trust, integrity, and—”
Suddenly, the microphone cut out.
Arthur frowned, tapping the mic. “Hello? Is the audio working?”
The massive projection screen behind him flickered violently. Instead of the polished tribute video detailing his surgical career, a stark, high-definition image appeared on the screen.
It was a hospital medical file. Specifically, it was the live-donor waiver from three years ago, with the name ELEANOR VANCE highlighted in bright, glowing yellow.
The crowd began to murmur in confusion. Margaret stood up from her table, her face instantly turning pale. “What is the meaning of this? Turn that off!”
Before anyone could move, the audio system crackled back to life. But it wasn't Arthur’s voice that filled the room. It was a secret audio recording, crystal clear and terrifyingly sharp.
“I was hoping you would make this easy, Eleanor. But if you want a war, you have no idea who you are fighting. The boy is a Vance. He stays with us. We can portray her as postpartum, unstable, and vindictive. Who will the judge believe? The world-renowned heart surgeon, or a woman with a history of chronic pain?”
The entire ballroom gasped. The voice was unmistakably Arthur’s. The calculation, the cold malice, and the sheer cruelty in his tone sent a shiver through the audience.
“Turn it off! Shut down the power!” Arthur screamed from the stage, his face twisting into the same furious mask he had worn in the maternity ward.
But the screen changed again. This time, it displayed a massive, scrolling spreadsheet of financial records, Swiss bank accounts, and patient death certificates. A large bold title appeared at the top of the screen:
“THE VANCE MALPRACTICE AND ILLEGAL ORGAN PIPELINE: THE RECORD OF MURDER AND EXTORTION.”
The doors of the ballroom suddenly burst open.

A squad of twenty federal agents, wearing dark blue jackets with FBI emblazoned across the back, marched into the room. Leading them was Dr. Harris, alongside a high-ranking federal prosecutor.
And standing right beside them, looking calm, powerful, and utterly breathtaking in a simple, elegant red dress, was Eleanor.
