Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionThe interrogation room at the federal holding facility smelled of ozone, bleach, and unadulterated fear.

Richard Whitmore sat at the steel table, his expensive cuffs clinking against the metal surface every time he shifted his weight. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot, and the arrogant billionaire facade had completely shattered, replaced by the shivering shell of a man who had finally realized the abyss he had fallen into.

The heavy steel door swung open, and I stepped into the room.

Richard jerked his head up, his teeth gritting together in a mixture of hatred and desperation. "You! You think you're clever, don't you? You think a few federal badges make you a king?"

I pulled out the chair opposite him, sat down slowly, and placed a single manila folder on the table. I didn't say a word. I just opened it and slid a photograph across the steel surface.

Richard glanced down at it, and his breath caught in his throat.

It was a copy of a medical report from three years ago—the first time Richard had hospitalized Lily, back when he told her that if she ever called her father, he would ruin me completely.

"Where... where did you get this?" Richard stammered, his voice dropping an octave. "I had the local clinic's records expunged! I paid off the attending physician!"

"You paid off local doctors, Richard," I said, my voice eerily calm. "You bought local judges. You greased the palms of local cops. But you never bothered to check who owned the secure medical server architecture used by federal intelligence contractors across the eastern seaboard."

Richard stared at me, his eyes wide with sudden, sickening realization. "You... you weren't just a mechanic. Who the hell are you?"

"Fifteen years ago, my call sign was Ghost-One," I said quietly. "I commanded the black-ops unit that neutralized international cartels, corrupt politicians, and corporate syndicates that thought national borders protected them. When my wife died, I laid down the weapon. I chose to be invisible. I chose to be Lily’s father. But you mistook my peace for weakness."

Richard swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I didn't know. If I had known—"

"If you had known, you still would have done it," I interrupted, leaning forward. "Because entitlement doesn't fear consequences; it only fears exposure."

Richard slumped back in his chair, trembling. "Please... Arthur. Mr. Miller. We can make a deal. I have offshore accounts—millions of dollars. I can transfer them to Lily. To you. Whatever you want. Just call off your people. Let me out of these cuffs."

I reached across the table, closed the manila folder, and stood up.

"The money in those offshore accounts was seized by the Treasury Department forty minutes ago, Richard," I said, buttoning my flannel shirt. "Your real estate empire is currently being auctioned off to state housing cooperatives. Your mother is facing federal conspiracy charges. And you..."

I paused at the door, turning back to look at him one last time.

"You're going to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary where money doesn't talk, and nobody cares who your father was."

As I stepped out into the hallway, Director Vance was waiting for me with a tablet in hand.

"Sir, we've secured the primary hard drives from the Whitmore corporate headquarters. But there's an encrypted flash drive we couldn't open. It was hidden in Richard's personal wall safe, encrypted with military-grade protocols."

I took the tablet, looking at the complex decryption algorithm displayed on the screen. It was an old cipher—one I had helped design back during my active-duty days.

"Plug it into my mobile unit," I instructed.

Vance connected the drive. Within three seconds, the encryption dissolved, revealing a single hidden folder labeled: PROJECT LEVIATHAN.

I tapped the screen, and the first file opened. My eyes narrowed as I read the contents.

This wasn't just about local corruption or domestic abuse. The Whitmore family wasn't running a regional real estate scam. They were fronting something much darker—something that reached straight into the federal government's inner circle.

And my daughter had accidentally stumbled right into the middle of it.
