Chapter 3 - The Conspiracy Takes RootOver the next twenty-four months, Cora became a fixture at the Thorne estate.

To the outside world, she was simply the kennel maid, invisible and unimportant. But within the walls of the estate, an unspoken alliance had formed. Dante Thorne, a man who trusted no one, found himself sitting on the stone bench outside the kennels more and more often, watching Cora run drills with Nero across the lawn.
Nero had transformed from a broken, aggressive animal into a magnificent, disciplined guardian who shadowed Cora’s every step. He slept outside her cottage door every night, his heavy breathing a steady rhythm that chased away the nightmares of her mother's illness.
But power in the underworld is a zero-sum game, and Dante was making enemies.
One evening in late autumn, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the main entrance. Out stepped Viktor Vance—a ruthless, smooth-talking syndicate boss from Chicago who had been trying to muscle in on Dante’s shipping routes for over a year.
Cora was trimming hedges near the grand foyer windows when she heard their voices drifting through the glass.
"—you're losing your edge, Dante," Vance's voice purred smoothly. "That girl you keep around the kennels. She’s a liability. Anyone can see she’s a weak spot."
"She works with the dogs, Viktor. She’s nothing," Dante replied coldly.
"Everyone is something to someone," Vance laughed. "Be careful. Loose ends have a habit of fraying at the worst possible time."
Cora froze behind the hydrangeas. Her breath caught in her throat. She wasn't just a kennel maid anymore; she had become a pawn in a war she didn't understand.
Two days later, the trap snapped shut.

It started with a missing ledger from Dante's private study—a ledger containing routing numbers and offshore accounts that could bring down the entire Thorne empire. Then came the anonymous tip to the local authorities.
And finally, at six in the morning, the handcuffs clicked shut around Cora's wrists.
