Chapter 8 - The ReleaseThe county holding cell door didn't just open—it swung wide with a loud, echoing bang that made the duty officer jump out of his chair.

Cora looked up from the metal bench, blinking against the harsh hallway lights.

Standing in the doorway wasn't a greasy detective. It was Dante Thorne, wearing his signature charcoal suit, looking as calm as if he were walking into a boardroom meeting. And beside him, tail wagging in slow, heavy sweeps against his legs, was Nero.

"You're out," Dante said simply.

Cora stood up slowly, her legs feeling like lead. "How? The charges—the federal paperwork—"

"The federal paperwork was mysteriously dropped after Mr. Vance suffered a sudden change of heart regarding his business investments in Tennessee," Dante said, a faint, rare ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. "He realized he preferred Chicago."

Cora looked down at Nero. The huge dog trotted across the cell, pressing his heavy head straight into her stomach, nearly knocking her over as he let out a dramatic, wheezing sigh of relief. She wrapped her arms around his thick neck, burying her face in his slate-gray fur as the hot tears she had held back all day finally broke free.

"I told you I’d get you out," Cora whispered into his ear.

"He knew," Dante said quietly, stepping into the cell and holding out a folded legal document stamped with a federal judge's emergency seal of exoneration. "And so did I."

As they walked out of the precinct doors into the cool morning air, Cora realized her old life—the rented room, the debt, the constant fear of tomorrow—was gone. But as Dante opened the door of the SUV and Nero hopped inside with a happy thud, she looked at the man holding the door.

He wasn't just a mafia boss. He was the only person who understood that sometimes, the most dangerous creatures in the world are just waiting for someone brave enough to show them kindness.
