Chapter 10 - THE FINAL LEDGERSix months later, the autumn leaves had turned to brilliant shades of crimson and gold, blanketing the manicured lawns of Blackwood Manor—which had now been officially restored as a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting families affected by severe medical allergies and corporate fraud.

I sat behind the large mahogany desk in my home office, the morning light pouring through the window and warming the hardwood floor.
My phone buzzed on the corner of the desk. I picked it up and unlocked the screen.
It was a notification from the federal prosecutor’s office: Evelyn Hart’s trial concluded. Sentenced to forty-two years without the possibility of parole. Co-conspirators Michael Vance and Dr. Harrison Vance received identical federal sentences.
There would be no appeals. No backroom deals. No secret bailouts. The empire built on theft, manipulation, and murder had finally been ground to dust.
I set the phone down, leaned back in my leather chair, and looked out the window toward the backyard.
Down on the lawn, Lily was running across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Eleanor had bought her for her ninth birthday. Her laughter carried up on the crisp autumn breeze, bright, carefree, and completely unafraid.
Sitting on a white wooden bench beneath the shade of a massive oak tree was Eleanor, watching Lily run, a warm, content smile on her face as she sipped from a porcelain teacup.
The door to my office clicked open softly, and a warm hand rested gently on my shoulder.
I looked up.
In the reflection of the window, I didn't see the ghosts of the past anymore. I didn't see the dark hallways, the whispered lies, or the flashing lights of the emergency room.
I saw a future built on truth, protection, and unconditional love.

“Come on, Dad!” Lily’s voice rang out from the lawn, her small hand waving frantically toward the window. “You promised you’d help me build the treehouse today!”
I smiled, stood up from the desk, and walked out into the sunlight.
