Chapter 4 - The Shattered Mirror

By 6:00 PM, the Whitmore mansion was no longer a place of luxury. It was a fortress under siege.
The Easter guests had fled hours ago after news broke on social media that the Whitmore family was under federal investigation for massive financial corruption. The white party tents outside were shredded by the rising wind and heavy rain, flapping wildly like ghost sheets.
Inside the grand study, Richard Whitmore was pouring his fourth glass of scotch. His hand was shaking so badly the crystal decanter clinked against the glass.
Margaret paced back and forth, her diamond rings clicking together nervously. "Where are the lawyers? Why isn't anyone answering the phone?!"
"Because they're running, Mom!" Richard shouted, slamming his glass onto the mahogany desk. "Every firm in the city just dropped us! Our retainer accounts were frozen by federal injunctions!"
The heavy oak doors of the study burst open.
The leader of the Vanguard mercenary team stumbled in, his ear wrapped in a bloody bandage, looking pale and terrified.
Richard leaped up. "Where have you been?! Is the old man dead?"
"You lied to us," the mercenary leader snarled, stepping into the room. "You said he was a fucking widower who fixed gutters!"
"He IS a widower!" Margaret screamed. "He's a nobody!"
"He wiped out my four-man team in eight seconds flat!" the mercenary roared, throwing the small black flash drive onto the desk. "He left this for you. He said you have less than two hours."
Richard stared at the small piece of metal lying on his desk. His pride, built on years of inherited wealth and unchecked power, fought against the rising tide of pure terror in his chest.
"He's playing mind games," Richard spat, trying to sound confident. "He's an old man with some military training. That's all. I have the police, I have—"
"You don't have shit!" the mercenary snapped. "Chief Vance was just arrested live on the evening news. The state police raided his house an hour ago. They found two million dollars in unrecorded cash in his gun safe."
Richard’s face drained of color. He slowly reached out and picked up the flash drive.
With trembling hands, he plugged it into his laptop.
The screen flickered, then opened a video file.
It wasn't a message from Arthur. It was a live feed of the Whitmore family's most private transactions.
Document after document scrolled across the screen:
Confidential bank logs showing money transfers to shell accounts tied to illegal land seizures.
Audio files of Richard’s mother ordering the intimidation of former staff members who had threatened to report abuse.
And finally, a high-definition video recording taken from Lily’s phone—the audio clear as a bell, capturing Richard’s voice right before he struck her: “Your father is a nobody, Lily. I own this town. I can break your neck and no one will ever care.”
Below the video, a red timer was counting down.
00:42:15 00:42:14 00:42:13
"He's going to release it," Margaret whispered, clutching her throat. "If that video hits the national media, the company will crumble. You'll go to prison for life!"
"He won't release it," Richard said, a dark, desperate madness creeping into his eyes. "He loves his daughter too much. If he releases that, her face, her embarrassment, her pain will be broadcast to the entire world."
"You don't understand, Richard," the mercenary leader said, stepping toward the exit. "He isn't trying to win a legal battle. He's coming here to execute you. My contract is canceled. Good luck."
"Wait! I'll double your fee! Ten million dollars!" Richard screamed.
"Money is useless when you're dead," the mercenary replied, closing the door behind him.
Richard stood frozen in the quiet room. Outside, lightning flashed, illuminating the grand portrait of his family hanging above the fireplace.
Then, the power to the entire estate cut out.
The lights flickered, died, and emergency generators failed to kick in. Darkness swallowed the mansion, broken only by the sharp flashes of lightning through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
From the dark hallway outside the study, a slow, deliberate sound echoed.
