Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Richard scrambled to his hands and knees, dragging himself to the mahogany desk. He looked at the screen.
The red timer had reached 00:00:00.
Automatically, the system executed its final command.
The high-definition video of Richard striking Lily, along with encrypted ledgers detailing decades of political bribery, illegal real estate coercion, and money laundering, was simultaneously broadcast to every major news network in the country, the Department of Justice, and the State Supreme Court ethics board.
On the desk, Richard’s personal laptop began to explode with notifications. Emails. News alerts. Push notifications.
CNN BREAKING NEWS: LEAKED VIDEO SHOWS REAL ESTATE HEIR RICHARD WHITMORE ASSAULTING WIFE; FEDERAL CHARGES FILED. MSNBC: WHITMORE HOLDINGS ACCUSED OF SYSTEMIC MONEY LAUNDERING AND JUDICIAL BRIBERY. LOCAL NEWS: POLICE CHIEF VANCE ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO WHITMORE CORRUPTION RING.
Within seconds, heavy footsteps thundered up the stairs of the mansion.
Federal agents in tactical gear, armed with assault rifles, burst into the study, flashlights cutting through the darkness.
"Federal agents! Put your hands where we can see them! On the ground! NOW!"
Margaret screamed as an agent tackled her to the floor, pinning her wrists behind her back.
Richard sat frozen on the floor, staring at the flashing lights of the tactical gear, his mind completely numb. An agent kicked the iron poker away, seized Richard by his hair, and slammed his face against the Persian rug—the very same rug where Lily had bled hours earlier.
"Richard Whitmore Jr., you are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and felony aggravated assault," the agent barked, pulling Richard’s arms behind his back and clicking cold, steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"My... my family owns..." Richard stammered, his face pressed into the carpet, his nose bleeding onto the fabric. "My family..."
"Your family is bankrupt, son," the agent said coldly, hauling him to his feet. "Your assets were frozen twenty minutes ago. You don't even own the shoes on your feet."
As Richard was dragged down the grand marble staircase, he saw federal officers placing evidence tags on his family's art, seizing safe deposit boxes, and escorting his mother out in handcuffs.
Out on the front porch, rain washing away the remains of the Easter decorations, Richard was pushed into the back of a black armored federal van.
As the doors prepared to slam shut, Richard looked across the driveway.
Standing under the shelter of an old oak tree, holding a large black umbrella, was Arthur Miller.
Beside him stood Sarah Vance, handing him a warm cup of coffee from a thermos.
Arthur wasn't wearing handcuffs. No agents were pointing guns at him. The lead Federal Marshal walked up to Arthur, shook his hand with deep, visible respect, and handed him a copy of the protective order securing Lily’s absolute safety.
Richard slammed his bloodied forehead against the van’s small window, screaming incoherently through the reinforced glass.
Arthur looked over at the van. He didn't smile. He didn't raise his fist in victory.

He simply raised his coffee cup in a quiet, final toast.
The van doors slammed shut, locking Richard Whitmore into the darkness of his new reality.
