Chapter 3 - The Trap ClosesJulian’s back hit the heavy wooden door of the hospital room. He was breathing heavily, sweat beading on his forehead as he realized the depth of the abyss he had walked into. He had spent years believing Arthur Vance was a harmless, quiet pensioner who spent his days tending to a garden and occasionally visiting his granddaughter.

"You can't touch me," Julian snarled, his voice trembling despite his bravado. "I have high-powered lawyers. I have rights. If you lay a hand on me again, I’ll—"

"You’ll do nothing," a new voice interrupted from the doorway.

The door pushed open further, revealing two men in dark suits holding leather badges. Federal Marshals. Behind them stood Dr. Evans, my primary attending physician, accompanied by hospital security and a local detective.

"Julian Sterling?" the lead federal agent asked, stepping into the room. "I’m Agent Miller, U.S. Department of Justice. You’re under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, interstate conspiracy, and attempted premeditated murder."

Julian staggered backward, his hand fumbling behind him for the door handle. "This is a setup! It's a conspiracy!"

"Everything is documented," Dr. Evans said, stepping forward with a digital tablet. She looked at Julian with undisguised disgust. "We pulled the telemetry data from Mrs. Sterling’s vehicle before it was towed away. The braking system was manually disabled via an encrypted remote override module—an override signal that was traced directly to an IP address registered to your office computer, Julian."

The room fell into a suffocating silence. There was no way out. No legal loophole, no clever excuse, no gaslighting could save him now.

Agent Miller stepped up, clicking steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists with practiced efficiency. The sharp click-click of the metal echoed like a death knell for our eleven-year marriage.

As Julian was forced around, his eyes locked onto mine one last time. There was no remorse in them—only a cold, burning hatred.

"You think you’ve won, Audrey?" Julian spat as the marshals dragged him toward the hallway. "You’re broke! Without me, you have nothing! You’ll lose the house, you’ll lose your daughter, and you’ll spend the rest of your pathetic life begging for scraps!"

The door slammed shut, cutting off his muffled screams as they escorted him down the corridor.

I sat frozen against the propped-up pillows of the hospital bed. The adrenaline that had sustained me began to drain away, leaving behind a hollow, aching void. My chest heaved with pain, and a single tear traced a hot path down my cheek, dropping onto the stainless steel tray.

"He's right about one thing, Dad," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I have nothing left."

My father walked over to the bedside, his stern demeanor instantly melting away into a profound, aching tenderness. He gently pulled up a chair, sat down, and reached out to calloused, warm hands that clasped mine.

"You have your life, sweetheart," my father said softly, his thumb gently wiping away the tear on my cheek. "And you have Chloe. As for the rest of it? Let me handle the wreckage. That’s what I do best."
