Chapter 5 - The Dominoes FallWithin hours of the tactical entry into the Myers Park estate, the legal and financial foundation of the Ferguson dynasty evaporated like morning mist.

State troopers, accompanied by federal marshals and military investigators, executed simultaneous raids across Ferguson Enterprises corporate headquarters, the private law firms that had protected them for decades, and the personal residences of their corrupt judicial allies.

Nicholas sat handcuffed to a stainless-steel chair in an interrogation room at the federal courthouse downtown. The tailored Italian suit he wore that morning was rumpled, his expensive watch confiscated, his hair messy.

The door swung open, and a federal prosecutor walked in, dropping a thick stack of printed transcripts onto the metal table.

"Mr. Ferguson, your mother has already agreed to a full cooperative statement in exchange for reduced sentencing parameters for herself and your brother," the prosecutor said, leaning against the doorframe with a bored expression. "She provided the encryption keys to your primary offshore accounts in Zurich."

Nicholas stared blankly at the table. "That's impossible. My mother would never..."

"Your mother values her freedom and her remaining assets far more than she values your liberty, Nicholas," the prosecutor interrupted smoothly. "Furthermore, the military has officially filed federal charges under Title 18 for cyber-stalking, unlawful imprisonment, and interstate extortion of an active-duty military family member."

Nicholas swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Where... where is the Colonel?"

"Colonel Gardner?" The prosecutor offered a cold, humorless smile. "She’s back at the hospital with her daughter. And trust me, Mr. Ferguson, you don't ever want to cross paths with her again."

Meanwhile, back at St. Bernard Hospital, Abigail sat propped up against a mountain of pillows, eating a bowl of warm soup. The swelling around her eye was beginning to turn a greenish-yellow, and her lip was healing, but the perpetual tremor in her hands had finally vanished.

The door gently pushed open, and I walked in, having stripped off my tactical vest and returned to a clean, crisp service uniform.

"How are you feeling, sweetie?" I asked softly, pulling a chair up to the bedside.

Abigail looked up, a small, genuine smile touching the corners of her mouth—the first real smile I had seen in years. "I feel... safe, Mom. For the first time in three years, I actually feel safe."

"You never have to look over your shoulder again," I promised, taking her hand and squeezing it gently. "The prosecutors just confirmed that all three of them are being held without bail. Their assets are frozen, the company is facing federal liquidation, and their political protectors have abandoned them."

Abigail let out a long, shuddering breath of relief, leaning her head against my shoulder. "They thought money and power could buy anything. They thought nobody would ever fight back."

"They forgot a fundamental rule of life," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "You never back a mother into a corner—especially one who wears stars on her shoulders."
