Chapter 6 - Midnight ConfessionsAt 2:00 AM, sleep was impossible. The wind howling off the Hudson rattled the heavy windowpanes of the east wing suite, sounding too much like the whispers of the men who had cornered her in the parking garage.

Needing air, Bianca cracked open the heavy oak door and stepped out into the dimly lit hallway. The mansion was dead silent, save for the ticking of a grandfather clock downstairs.

She wandered toward the end of the corridor, looking for a kitchen or a library where she might find a glass of water. As she passed a set of double doors left slightly ajar, a sliver of warm light spilled across the Persian rug.

She heard voices. Low, controlled, but carrying an edge of sharp steel.

"...the Moretti shipment is moving through the docks at midnight tomorrow, Boss," a gravelly voice reported. "Should we intercept?"

"No," Tristan’s voice answered, cold and calculating. "Let them load the cargo. I want to catch Vincenzo Moretti with his hands dirty before I take everything he owns."

"And the nurse?" another voice asked—a younger man, likely Leo, sounding recovered. "Tristan, keeping her here... it’s a liability. If the board finds out you’ve got an innocent civilian living in the master wing—"

"Let them try to say something to me," Tristan interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, ringing with absolute authority that brooked no argument. "Bianca stays. Anyone who touches her answers to me. End of discussion."

Bianca froze outside the door, her hand hovering over the wood. A strange, terrifying warmth bloomed in her chest. A mafia boss—a ruthless, untouchable criminal kingpin—was putting his entire empire on the line just to keep her safe from the crossfire of his war.

Suddenly, footsteps approached the inside of the door. Bianca panicked, spun around, and hurried down the hall just as the door clicked open.

"Bianca."

She stopped dead. Tristan’s voice caught her like a hook in the water.

She turned slowly. Tristan was standing in the doorway of his study, wearing a black silk robe loosely tied at his waist, his dark hair slightly damp as if he had just washed up. His sharp eyes scanned her face, missing nothing.

"You should be sleeping," he said softly, walking toward her down the dim corridor.

"I couldn't," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. She looked up at him, feeling the magnetic pull between them grow too strong to resist. "I heard what you said in there. You're risking everything by keeping me here."

Tristan stopped just inches away from her. Up close, in the quiet shadows of the midnight hallway, the dangerous aura around him softened, replaced by an intense, heavy gravity.

"I've been risking everything my entire life, Bianca," he murmured, raising a hand to gently brush a strand of hair away from her cheek. His fingers grazed her skin, sending electric shivers straight down her spine. "Keeping you safe isn't a risk. It’s a choice."

"Why?" she breathed out, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Why protect me? We met because I fell asleep in your car. We have nothing in common."

"We have everything in common," Tristan answered, his voice dropping to a rough, intimate whisper as he stepped closer, trapping her gently between his body and the wood-paneled wall. "We both know what it's like to carry the weight of life and death on our shoulders. The only difference is... you save people, and I destroy them."

"Then let me go," she whispered, though her body didn't move away. "Before you destroy me too."

May you like

Tristan looked down at her lips, his dark eyes darkening with an emotion that looked dangerously like hunger. "I would burn this entire city to the ash before I let anyone lay a hand on you, Bianca."

And before she could draw another breath, his lips met hers.
