Chapter 20 - The Horizon of Forever

The sun broke through the gray November clouds just as I stepped out of the heavy glass doors of the library, casting a brilliant, golden wash over the bustling downtown sidewalk.

Maya broke away from Clara, running across the wet pavement with her little rain boots splashing in the puddles, her pink raincoat fluttering behind her like the wings of a small butterfly.

"Grandma! Grandma!" she called out, throwing her arms around my legs as I knelt down to catch her in a tight, enveloping hug.

Clara walked up slowly, holding her yellow umbrella high, a peaceful, contented smile gracing her face as she looked down at the two of us. The air smelled of wet asphalt, roasting chestnuts, and the crisp, clean promise of a brand-new season.

"Ready to go home, Mom?" Clara asked softly, extending her free hand down toward me.

I looked up from Maya’s smiling face into my daughter's eyes—eyes that held no more ghosts, no more secrets, and no more shadows. The past was buried where it belonged, the syndicate was dust, and our future was unwritten, wide open like the horizon stretching out endlessly across the Ohio sky.

"Yes, sweetheart," I answered, taking Clara’s hand and standing up tall with Maya clinging happily to my coat pocket. "Let's go home."
