Chapter 29 - The Garden of Beginnings

Six months later, the grounds of our Columbus home looked entirely transformed. The old, neglected lawn had been completely redesigned into a vibrant, sprawling garden filled with blooming spring tulips, fragrant lavender, and rich, dark soil ready for planting.

It was a Saturday morning in May, and the warm sunlight bathed the backyard in a golden glow. Maya was kneeling in the dirt near the back fence, wearing a small pair of yellow gardening gloves, carefully planting sunflower seeds into the earth under Mark’s watchful eye.

I stood on the back porch, holding a watering can, watching them laugh as a stray butterfly fluttered past Maya’s nose.

Clara walked out the screen door, carrying a tray of iced lemonade and two glasses, stepping up beside me at the porch railing. She took a deep breath of the sweet spring air, smiling as she watched her daughter play.

"You know, Mom," Clara said quietly, handing me a glass of lemonade, "for a long time, I thought our family history was a curse—something broken that could never be fixed."

I took a sip of the cold lemonade, looking out across the blooming garden. "We spent so much time looking backward, Clara. Trying to outrun the ghosts, trying to fix the unfixable. But life isn't about the chapters that were written for us by someone else."

"No," Clara agreed, leaning her head gently against my shoulder. "It’s about the ones we write ourselves."

From across the yard, Maya suddenly jumped up, waving her little yellow-gloved hands in the air. "Grandma! Mom! Come look! The first sunflower is going to grow right here!"

Clara and I smiled at each other, setting our glasses down on the porch table, and walked hand-in-hand down the wooden steps into the warm, sunlit garden.

The past was a book finished and shelved, its dark pages closed forever. But the future was wide open, waiting to be lived, one beautiful, ordinary day at a time.
