Hook: “They think they own the town,” the investigator said, handing over the drive. “But this will burn their entire empire to the ground.”

The next afternoon, Sarah met her investigator, Marcus, in a quiet, out-of-the-way diner on the highway.

Marcus slid a small USB drive across the table. “You were right, Sarah. Eleanor Mitchell isn't just a tough businesswoman. She’s been using Quantum Investments to launder money for offshore shell companies to avoid millions in federal taxes. Your husband, Robert, signed off on all of it.”

Sarah gripped the drive. “Is it enough to put them away?”

“It’s enough to trigger an federal investigation that will freeze every single asset the Mitchell family owns,” Marcus said seriously. “But Sarah... once you pull this trigger, there’s no going back. Your husband will go to prison. Your mother-in-law will be ruined. And your life as you know it will be over.”

“My life as I know it is a lie,” Sarah said without hesitation.

She drove straight to Rosemary’s cottage. She needed to get Emma and Rosemary to safety before the storm hit.

But when she arrived, the front door of the cottage was wide open.

Inside, the living room was ransacked. Rosemary’s knitted scarves were scattered across the floor. The metal lockbox was gone.

Sarah’s heart stopped. “Lily! Emma!” she screamed.

She ran back to her car, where she had left Lily under the care of her trusted nanny, Maria. But the car was empty. The driver’s side window was smashed.

On the dashboard lay a single, elegant cream-colored envelope.
