Chapter 4 - "The 3:00 AM Coup: The Boardroom Becomes a Guillotine"

By 3:00 a.m., the storm had passed, leaving the streets of Port Haven glistening with wet asphalt and littered with debris.

But inside the corporate headquarters of Moretti Maritime, a different kind of storm was reaching its peak.

Dante sat at the head of the boardroom table, still wearing his damp, rumpled tuxedo. He had not slept. He had not washed the dirt from his hands. He simply sat there, staring at the empty seat across from him.

The double doors swung open, and Bianca Ross walked in, followed by the five senior board members of the Moretti Group.

"What is the meaning of this, Bianca?" Dante asked, his voice low and dangerous. "Why did you call an emergency board meeting at three in the morning?"

Bianca didn't look intimidated. She took her seat at the opposite end of the table, placing a thick leather folder in front of her.

"Because, Dante, as of thirty minutes ago, the Moretti Maritime Group is facing a catastrophic public relations and financial crisis," Bianca said smoothly. She tapped her phone, projecting a series of images onto the large screen behind Dante.

Dante turned his head.

There, projected in high-definition, was the photograph of him smiling beside Bianca at the summit.

But the headline beneath it was devastating: “MAFIA PRINCE DANTE MORETTI CELEBRATES MERGER WITH MISTRESS WHILE PREGNANT WIFE IS HOSPITALIZED AFTER NEAR-FATAL HIT-AND-RUN.”

Dante stared at the screen, his jaw tightening. "This is a lie. You know Isabella wasn't in a hit-and-run, and you know there is nothing going on between us."

"The public doesn't know that," Bianca countered. "And frankly, the public doesn't care about the truth. They care about the narrative. The narrative is that you are a cold, ruthless sociopath who abandoned his pregnant wife during a natural disaster to drink champagne with his mistress and sign deals with known criminal syndicates."

"I didn't sign the deal," Dante growled.

"Exactly," Bianca said, a cold smile playing on her lips. "By walking out of that room, you insulted Victor Vance. The Vance family has officially pulled out of the alliance. They have blocked our ships from entering the West Coast ports. Our stock price has plummeted forty percent in after-hours trading."

One of the senior board members, an elderly man named Arthur Pendelton who had served Dante’s father for forty years, sighed.

"Dante, we cannot allow your personal life to destroy this company," Pendelton said. "Your father built this legacy on loyalty and stability. You have shown neither tonight."

"My wife was in labor!" Dante slammed his fist onto the table, the mahogany wood rattling. "Do you expect me to prioritize a contract over the life of my son?!"

"We expected you to manage both, like a leader," Bianca said coldly. "But you failed. You left your wife unprotected, causing her to drive herself into a crash. And then you abandoned your business partners, costing us billions."

She pushed the leather folder across the table toward him.

"What is this?" Dante asked.

"It's a vote of no confidence," Bianca said. "Under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, the board has the authority to remove the CEO in the event of extreme personal negligence that threatens the financial viability of the company. With forty percent of our stock wiped out and a war with the Vance family looming, we have the majority vote."

Dante laughed, a dark, humorless sound. "You think you can take my company, Bianca? I own fifty-one percent of the shares. You can't touch me."

"You owned fifty-one percent, Dante," Bianca corrected him, her smile widening. "But you forgot about your marriage contract. In the event of a separation or divorce where marital misconduct is proved, your shares are frozen pending a court asset division. And since your wife has already filed for an emergency separation as of 2:30 a.m. tonight..."

She slid a second document toward him.

"Her lawyers have already petitioned the court to freeze your voting rights," Bianca whispered. "She has signed over her temporary proxy voting power to the board."

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the signature on the document.

Isabella Moretti.

She had done it. She had used her knowledge of the company’s legal structure to cut the legs out from under him. She knew exactly how to hurt him—not with a weapon, but with the very empire he had built.

"You're out, Dante," Bianca said, her voice filled with triumph. "Please pack your things. Security will escort you from the building."
