Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Blood Money

The courtroom descended into absolute chaos.
Brooke tried to slip out through the side exit reserved for staff, but two federal agents intercepted her before her heels even crossed the threshold. The diamond bracelet Julian had gifted her flashed under the fluorescent lights as they pulled her wrists behind her back and snapped on the handcuffs.
"Julian! Do something!" Brooke shrieked, her composed facade completely disintegrating. "You promised me I was covered! You said your lawyer handled the paper trail!"
"Shut up, Brooke!" Eleanor screamed from the gallery, standing up so fast her pearls caught on her purse strap and snapped, scattering white beads across the hardwood floor like hail. "Keep your mouth shut!"
"Silence in this courtroom!" Judge Harrison shouted, banging her gavel three times with thunderous force. "Bailiffs, secure the gallery! Mr. Vance, Ms. Miller, you are under federal arrest. Court is adjourned until 2:00 PM for emergency custody and protective orders."
Julian was forced to his knees by two agents as they read him his Miranda rights. His custom charcoal suit—the one he’d worn to marry me—was crushed against the dirty floor. As they hauled him up, his eyes met mine. The arrogant smirk was gone, replaced by a desperate, panicked terror.
"Clara, please!" he begged as he was dragged down the center aisle. "Think of Maya! You can't let them do this to me!"
"I am thinking of Maya," I whispered as he passed my table. "That's why you're never getting near her again."
Once the courtroom emptied, Agent Vance walked over to my table. He didn't look like a stranger; he looked like a colleague. Because he was.
"Excellent work, Clara," Agent Vance said, offering a tight, professional nod. "The encrypted drive you sent to our field office at 6:00 AM gave us everything we needed. The grand jury issued the sealed indictment twenty minutes ago."
Maya ran into my arms, burying her face in my shoulder. I squeezed her tight, kissing the top of her head, feeling the trembling stop in her small frame.
"You were so brave, baby," I whispered.
"Did I do it right, Mommy?" Maya asked, looking up with her big brown eyes. "Did I stop Daddy from taking us away?"
"You saved us," I told her, my voice thick with emotion.
What Julian had never realized was that my twelve years as a forensic accountant hadn't just given me the ability to read spreadsheets—it had given me a network. When I noticed subtle anomalies in our joint accounts six months ago, I didn't confront Julian. I knew better. I quietly contacted my former colleagues at the Treasury Department and began a parallel investigation.
Julian thought he was clever. He had created four separate limited liability companies registered in the Cayman Islands and Delaware, using offshore accounts to funnel millions out of our marital assets. He believed he was hiding money from a bitter wife during a divorce.
What he didn't realize was that the money he was moving didn't belong to his company.
It belonged to a cartel-linked investment group operating out of Miami.
Julian hadn't just hidden money from me; he had laundered over fifteen million dollars through fake real estate transactions, using my forged signature as the primary officer on the shell corporations. He intended to let me take the fall when the Treasury Department inevitably closed in, leaving him free to escape to Dubai with Brooke and the remainder of the fortune.
"We have Julian and Brooke in custody," Agent Vance said, leaning over my table. "But Clara, you need to be careful. The people Julian was laundering for... they aren't going to wait for a court trial to get their fifteen million back. And now that Julian is locked up, they're going to look at the person whose name is on the paperwork."

My heart sank. "My name."
"Yes," Agent Vance nodded grimly. "As far as the cartel is concerned, Clara Vance owes them fifteen million dollars. And they know where you live."
