Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Downfall

Eleanor’s smile wavered for the very first time.

"What are you talking about?" she demanded.

I pulled a small black thumb drive from my pocket and held it up in the ambient light of the tarmac.

"Julian thought he was clever with his little shell companies," I said. "But Julian was sloppy. He used your private security keys to authorize the international transfers. Every single dollar that moved from the Miami syndicate into the Swiss trust bears your digital footprint, your private bank passcodes, and your biometric signatures."

"That’s impossible," Arthur gasped from inside the car. "Those keys were encrypted with military-grade protocols!"

"I spent twelve years breaking corporate encryption for federal prosecutions," I replied without taking my eyes off Eleanor. "Your military-grade protocols took me forty-five minutes to crack."

Eleanor’s face turned gray. The aristocratic composure she had maintained her entire life vanished, revealing the desperate, terrified criminal underneath.

"Clara..." Eleanor’s voice softened, changing tone in an instant, attempting to play the role of the frail grandmother. "Think about Maya. She needs a family. She needs her grandmother’s legacy. I can make you richer than you ever dreamed. Fifty-fifty. We divide the trust. You can have the house, the money, anything you want! Just hand over the drive and let us leave."

I looked at this woman—the woman who had tried to steal my child, frame me for grand felony charges, and murder me in cold blood.

"My daughter doesn't need your blood money, Eleanor," I said quietly. "She needs a world where people like you are behind bars."

Blue and red lights suddenly broke through the thick fog.

Dozens of law enforcement vehicles swept onto the tarmac, surrounding the Gulfstream jet in a tight perimeter. Sirens blared, cutting through the damp night air.

Agent Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, backed by armed federal officers with weapons drawn.

"Eleanor Vance! Arthur Pendelton!" Vance announced through a megaphone. "Drop to your knees and put your hands on your head!"

Arthur didn't hesitate. He fell out of the car onto the wet asphalt, crying and babbling confessions.

Eleanor stood frozen, staring at me as the rain washed the makeup from her face.

"You ruined everything," she whispered, her voice trembling with pure hatred. "My family’s legacy... forty years of work..."

"You ruined yourself, Eleanor," I said as Agent Vance stepped up and pulled her arms behind her back, snapping the cold steel cuffs over her wrists. "I just audited the damage."
