Chapter 2 - The Audit of Roman CalderThe private VIP lounge on the top floor of the Belvedere Hotel smelled of old leather, spilled scotch, and impending disaster.

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut, locking automatically behind them. Inside were only four people: Roman, Owen (nursing his bruised pride and a stiff neck), Mara, and Ethan.
Roman paced the length of the Persian rug, his injured hand wrapped tightly in a white linen napkin that was rapidly turning crimson. He ignored the pain. His mind was racing through a thousand scenarios, every single one of them leading to a federal indictment.
"Federal oversight," Roman spat, turning on Ethan. "You're with the DOJ. An undercover task force. How long?"
Ethan walked over to the mahogany bar, poured himself a glass of club soda with a twist of lime, and didn't look at Roman. "Long enough to know that Calder Maritime is clean on paper, Mr. Calder. But Calder Holdings—the shell company registered out of the Cayman Islands that funnels forty percent of your shipping logistics—is currently being dismantled piece by piece."
Roman’s gaze snapped to Mara. "You."
Mara sat down on a velvet sofa, crossing one bare leg over the other, her posture relaxed yet guarded. She picked up a crystal decanter stopper and turned it slowly between her fingers. "Not me, Roman. You."
"You kept the books!" Roman shouted, abandoning his cool composure for the first time in a decade. "Every transaction passed through your hands! If Calder Holdings goes down, you go down with it as an accomplice!"
"Which is why," Mara said smoothly, "I spent the last fourteen months cooperating with federal investigators under a strict immunity agreement."
The room went dead silent. Even Owen stopped rubbing his neck.
Roman stared at her, feeling as though the floor beneath his Italian leather shoes had turned to ash. "You sold me out."
"I saved myself," Mara corrected, her voice steady and devoid of emotion. "For seven years, Roman, I was your ghost. I managed your empire, cleaned up your messes, protected your family name, and slept three hours a night while you treated me like an expensive piece of office furniture. When I asked for a partnership stake two years ago, you laughed and told me my place was behind the desk."
"I offered you a bonus!"
"You offered me a retainer," Mara countered, standing up. The midnight-green dress caught the amber light of the chandelier, accentuating her height, her confidence, and the undeniable power she had possessed all along. "You thought because I didn't fit your narrow definition of high-society glamour—because I wore oversized blazers and thick glasses—that I was invisible. You never looked at me. Not really."
"That's not true," Roman muttered, though the words felt hollow even to him.
"It is entirely true," Ethan said, stepping beside her and placing a hand gently on her shoulder. This time, Roman didn't flinch or reach for a weapon. He just felt a hollow, sickening weight settle in his stomach. "Mara provided the financial blueprint that proved Calder Holdings was financing illegal syndicate operations across the entire Eastern Seaboard. Federal warrants are being signed as we speak. By morning, your terminals will be seized, your assets frozen, and your captains in handcuffs."
Roman looked between them. The empire he had built, the legacy his grandfather left him, the absolute control he prided himself on—gone. Erased by a stroke of a pen and a woman he had spent seven years ignoring.
"Why tonight?" Roman asked quietly. "Why bring him to my gala? Why rub my face in it?"
Mara walked toward the door, stopping just before the threshold to look back over her shoulder.
"Because tonight, Roman, was your final test," she said softly. "And you failed. You didn't see me until I looked like everyone else. And by the time you realized what you had, you had already lost me."

The door clicked shut.
Roman Calder stood alone in the dark room, his hand bleeding, listening to the faint sound of champagne glasses clinking downstairs, completely unaware that his life as he knew it had just ended.
