Chapter 4 - The Trojan Horse

The encrypted flash drive sat on the center of my desk like a ticking time bomb. The small blue LED light blinked rhythmically in the dim, amber-lit study, casting an eerie glow across Alejandro’s sharp, calculating features.
"A cartel shell corporation," I repeated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "Are you telling me my wife—the woman who spent thirty thousand dollars on a single handbag in Milan—was laundering cartel money?"
"Not just laundering," Alejandro corrected, pulling a laptop from his briefcase and plugging the drive into the USB port. "Look at this."
The screen flickered to life, illuminating lines of corporate registry data, wire transfer receipts, and digital signatures. My stomach turned over. The phantom company—Azul Mar Consulting—was registered under an alias, but the banking routing numbers traced directly back to a private Swiss account controlled by Vanessa’s father, Senator Morales. And the physical address listed for the company’s local warehouse?
It was a derelict industrial lot in Ecatepec—the exact same lot where my engineering firm had recently won the municipal bid for a major public transit hub.
"They didn't just want to bleed you dry financially, Mateo," Alejandro whispered, his eyes fixed on the screen. "They wanted to frame you for corruption, sabotage your municipal contracts, and hand your entire business empire over to the Morales family on a silver platter. If the municipal audit hit your firm with those fake kickbacks attached, you’d be facing ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."
I stared at the screen, a cold, heavy numbness spreading through my limbs. All my life, I had worked twice as hard as anyone else just to prove I belonged. I had clawed my way out of the dirt in Tijuana, earned my degree at UNAM, built my firm from the ground up, and given Vanessa everything she could possibly desire—only to discover that she and her aristocratic family viewed me as nothing more than a convenient mule to launder their dirty money and bail out their failing dynasty.
"Where is Lucía now?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.
"In protective custody," Alejandro replied smoothly. "She came to my office voluntarily an hour after you kicked Vanessa out. She said she couldn't stomach being an accessory to destroying an innocent family anymore, especially after what she saw in the hallway today. She’s willing to testify as a primary witness."
"Good," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "Then we don't just file for divorce and custody tomorrow morning. We hand this entire drive directly to the Special Prosecutor for Organized Crime before we walk into family court."
May you like
Alejandro raised an eyebrow, a slow, approving grin spreading across his face. "You want to hit them with a RICO-style federal indictment and a custody battle simultaneously? That’s scorched earth, Mateo. There’s no coming back from that."
"There was no coming back the second she laid her hands on my mother," I replied coldly, walking over to the study door. "Come on. Let’s go pay a little visit to the federal prosecutor’s office. I want to make sure the paperwork is signed before sunrise."
