Chapter 5 - Dawn of Reckoning

The fluorescent lights of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office hummed with a sterile, relentless energy that matched the cold grey dawn breaking over Mexico City.

By 7:30 AM, Alejandro and I were seated across a scarred metal desk from Magistrate Ramos, one of the few high-ranking anti-corruption prosecutors in the district who couldn't be bought off by old-money politics or cartel bribes.

Ramos slowly scrolled through the contents of the flash drive on his encrypted terminal, his heavy brow furrowed deeper with every click. The silence in the cramped office was deafening, broken only by the distant clatter of typewriters and the hum of an ancient ceiling fan.

Finally, Ramos leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his stomach. He looked up at me, his eyes sharp and evaluating.

"Mr. Garza," Ramos began, his voice gravelly and low. "Do you realize what you’re handing over? Senator Morales is one of the most powerful political figures in the central district. If we execute a search warrant on his residence and freeze his remaining assets based on this evidence, it’s going to trigger a political earthquake that will shake Los Pinos."

"I don't care if it shakes the presidential palace, Prosecutor," I replied, my voice steady and unyielding. "My wife and her family attempted to frame me for financial crimes I didn't commit, while terrorizing my elderly mother and my two-year-old toddlers in my own home. They are criminals hiding behind expensive suits and family crests."

Ramos held my gaze for a long, tense moment. Then, a slow, grim smile touched his lips. He picked up his red stamp and slammed it down hard onto the warrant request form.

Approved.

"Get your legal team ready," Ramos said, sliding the stamped document across the desk. "We execute the warrants at 10:00 AM. Simultaneously at Senator Morales’s estate in Lomas de Chapultepec and the St. Regis penthouse where your wife is currently staying."

"Thank you, Prosecutor," I nodded, standing up to shake his hand.

"Don't thank me yet, Señor Garza," Ramos warned softly. "People like the Morales family don't go down quietly. When cornered, cornered rats bite hard. Make sure your family is secure."
