Chapter 5 - The Hospital VigilThe private pediatric wing of Saint Paul General was bathed in quiet, sterile light.

Ellie rested comfortably in a bed propped with soft pillows, an IV drip rehydrating her body while a warm blanket covered her shoulders. The doctor had assured Spencer that she was suffering from severe exhaustion, mild hypothermia, and malnutrition, but she would make a full recovery.

Outside in the private hallway, Spencer stood by the window, staring out at the falling snow while running a hand through his dark hair.

Marcus Cole walked up quietly, holding a thick manila folder.

“Boss,” Marcus said softly. “You were right about the girl. The grocery store security cameras confirm she found Wyatt shivering, gave him her own jacket, and walked him straight to the church basement. She saved him from severe frostbite.”

Spencer took the folder, his jaw clenching. “And what about her mother? Who are the Jensens?”

Marcus opened the folder, his expression turning grim. “That’s... that’s where things get complicated, sir. May Jensen. She’s a single mother, works two cleaning jobs. She lives in the Maple Street apartment complex.”

Spencer frowned, flipping open the property ledger inside the folder. “Maple Street? That’s Weston Properties real estate. Why do I know that name?”

“Because,” Marcus swallowed hard, “Maple Street is the low-income housing complex your corporate real estate division scheduled for demolition and eviction this coming Monday. Over fifty families are being put on the street.”

A cold, sickening horror washed over Spencer.

The little girl who had unzipped her only coat to save his son from freezing was currently facing eviction from the very company he owned.
