Chapter 8 - THE MORNING AFTERThe sun rose over New Jersey, burning away the mist and revealing a mansion surrounded by police cruisers, ambulances, and federal vans.

Victor Vance and his surviving mercenaries were loaded into armored transport vehicles in heavy chains. Katherine Caldwell was escorted out in a federal detention jacket, her face hidden behind a dark wool coat, cursing violently as flashing camera shutters blinded her in the morning light.
Ethan Caldwell stood on the grand front steps of his estate, watching the chaos unfold. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel like a kingpin guarding a throne. He felt... lighter.
He turned around, expecting to see Maggie standing quietly by the doorway with a cup of black coffee.
The doorway was empty.
He rushed inside, sweeping through the grand foyer, the west corridor, and down into the pristine marble kitchen.
The kitchen was spotless. Not a single dish was out of place.
On the polished granite island sat a single, neatly folded maid’s uniform, a cast-iron skillet resting squarely on top of it, and a small, handwritten note written in crisp, elegant cursive.
Ethan walked over slowly, picked up the note, and read the final words:
Mr. Caldwell,
My brother is safe. The debt is settled. The house is clean.
Consider hiring a better security chief next time.
— Maggie Doyle.
May you like
Ethan stared at the note for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, for the first time in over a decade, a genuine, unburdened laugh escaped his lips.
He picked up the cast-iron skillet, shook his head, and walked out into the morning air to start a brand new chapter.
