Chapter 8 - The Lake, The Legacy, And The New Beginning — "The Sweet Taste Of Ultimate Freedom!"

It has been six months since that fateful Friday night.
The black luxury SUV is no longer parked in my driveway. I sold it to a dealership for $24,000. After paying off the remaining loan balance, I walked away with a clean $11,000 in cash.
I used that money to book a three-month cruise around Europe.
Jason and Chloe didn't get a divorce. They couldn't afford the legal fees. Instead, they had to downsize. They moved out of their expensive rental house and into a small, two-bedroom apartment closer to Jason’s office. Chloe had to take a full-time job as a receptionist to help pay for their new, used Toyota Corolla.
They don't go to country clubs anymore. They don't take vacations to Cabo.
As for the grandchildren? I see them once a month now. Not because Chloe demands it, but because I invite them over for a Sunday afternoon movie. Chloe drops them off at my gate, she doesn't step foot on my property, and she speaks to me with absolute, trembling politeness. She calls me "Mrs. Vance" now.
She knows that one wrong look, one sarcastic comment, and the remaining pages of those $42,000 receipts will find their way onto the internet.
Yesterday, Jason called me. It was my birthday.
"Happy Birthday, Mom," he said. His voice sounded older, more grounded. "We bought you a sweater. We want to bring it over this weekend if you're free."
"Thank you, Jason," I said, looking out my window at my beautiful, clean, quiet garden. "But I’m actually heading back to the lake resort this weekend. You can leave it on the porch. But remember..."
I paused, letting the silence stretch between us.
"...don't try to use your old key. It still doesn't work."
"I know, Mom," he said quietly. "I remember."
I hung up the phone, packed my blue robe into my suitcase, and smiled.
They had finally learned respect.
But more importantly, I had finally remembered how to live.
May you like
