Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

With the list of names in hand, Aiden began a systematic purge of the Vanguard’s network in Harbor City.

Over the next forty-eight hours, corrupt police officers were arrested by internal affairs, dirty politicians resigned in disgrace, and secret warehouses were raided by federal agents who had suddenly received anonymous, irrefutable evidence.

The city was in chaos, but for the first time in years, the air felt cleaner.

At the safehouse, Rebecca sat with Zoey and Charlie. The children were coloring, the horror of their ordeal slowly fading into the background of their young minds.

Rebecca watched Aiden from across the room. He was standing by the window, staring out at the rain, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He looked exhausted, though he would never admit it.

She walked over to him, keeping her distance so as not to startle him.

"You've done so much," she said softly. "The news... they’re saying the syndicate is collapsing."

"The local branch is dead," Aiden said, not turning around. "But the head of the snake is still breathing."

"Why do you do this, Aiden?" she asked, using his first name for the first time. "You don't have to carry the weight of this city on your shoulders. You could have ignored Charlie on that sidewalk."

Aiden stayed silent for a long moment. The only sound was the scratching of crayons on paper from the children.

"When I was eight years old," Aiden began, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, "my sister was taken from our front yard. Right in front of me. I was too small. Too scared. I didn't say a word. I didn't whisper to anyone."

Rebecca gasped, her hand moving to her mouth.

"The police did what they always do," Aiden continued, his gaze fixed on the rain-streaked glass. "They filled out forms. They told my mother to wait. We waited. We waited for years. She never came back."

He turned to look at her, his eyes burning with a dark, ancient fire.

"When Charlie whispered to me... I didn't see him. I saw myself. And I swore to God, if I ever had the power to stop it, I would never let another child wait in the dark."

Before Rebecca could reply, the security alarms in the safehouse began to blare.

The red emergency lights flashed, casting a bloody glow over the room.

"Aiden!" Liam’s voice cut through the intercom. "We have multiple breeches! They bypassed the external sensors! They’re inside the perimeter!"

"How?" Aiden demanded, drawing his weapon.

"They had the security bypass codes," Liam gasped, pain in his voice. "Someone... someone leaked them."

The glass window behind Aiden shattered.

A flashbang rolled in, and the world went white.

Aiden reacted on instinct. He threw himself over Rebecca and the children, shielding them with his body as the explosion rocked the room.

Through the smoke, figures clad in state-of-the-art military gear descended from the ceiling on ropes. They weren't mercenaries. They were the Vanguard’s Elite Guard, the personal shadow army of the syndicate’s global leader.

Aiden pushed Rebecca and the kids toward the hidden panic room behind the bookcase. "Get in! Lock the door! Don't open it for anyone but me!"

"Aiden, no!" Rebecca screamed, but Mac grabbed her, shoving her and the children into the steel-reinforced room and slamming the door shut just as the gunfire erupted.

Aiden spun, firing his weapon, taking down two attackers, but he was heavily outnumbered. The room was tearing apart around him.

He lunged behind his desk, but a heavy explosive charge detonated near his position, throwing him through the air. He crashed into a glass display case, shards of glass embedding in his skin.

He tried to stand, his vision blurred, his ears ringing.

A figure stepped through the dust, wearing a pristine white suit that seemed completely unaffected by the chaos.

It was Julian Vance, the supreme patriarch of the Vanguard Syndicate. The man who sat at the top of the global food chain.

"Aiden Vale," Julian said, his voice smooth and cultured. "You have caused my family a great deal of trouble. You destroyed our operations, killed my sons, and ruined our reputation."

Aiden spat blood onto the floor, trying to reach for his dropped gun, but Julian stepped on his hand, crushing his fingers under his leather shoe.

"You thought you were a king, Aiden," Julian whispered, bending down and looking into Aiden’s eyes. "But you're just a boy who never grew up. You're still that helpless eight-year-old crying on the sidewalk."

Julian waved his hand to his men. "Bring the children out of the panic room. We have a drill that can cut through that steel door in three minutes. We will take them, and we will make Aiden watch before we end him."

Aiden clutched his chest, his breathing ragged, but as Julian turned his back, Aiden let out a low, bloody laugh.

Julian stopped, looking back over his shoulder. "What is so funny, Vale?"

"You think you bypassed my security," Aiden whispered, his hand sliding toward a small transmitter hidden in his cuff link. "But I let you in, Julian."

May you like

"What?"

"I needed the head of the snake," Aiden said, his eyes wild and fierce. "And you just walked right into my trap."
