Chapter 10 - THE FINAL MOVEThe entire restaurant went dead silent.

I stood up slowly, stepping slightly in front of Maya, who was staring at the woman in complete horror.

“What are you talking about?” Gabriel demanded, his fists clenched at his sides. “Richard told me—”

“Richard was a puppet,” Elena interrupted, taking a step closer to the table. “He thought he was using the Bratva to steal your assets. In reality, I was using Richard to tear down your empire from the inside so I could take Maya without a court battle.”

Maya shrank behind my back, her tiny fingers digging into my jacket. “Mama... no...”

Elena looked at Maya, her eyes softening for a split second before returning to icy calculation. “Come to Mommy, Maya. It’s time to go home. To Europe.”

“She’s not going anywhere with you,” I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room.

Elena turned her emerald eyes to me, scanning my tailored suit with disdain. “Ah. The waitress. I’ve read your file, Cassidy. You’re very brave. Very dramatic. But you’re way out of your depth.”

Elena raised her left hand, making a subtle gesture with her fingers.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling front windows, four heavy black sedans pulled up to the curb. Dozens of armed men in dark suits stepped out, completely surrounding the building. The patrons inside the restaurant began to panic, screaming as they scrambled toward the rear exits.

“I have forty armed men surrounding this block,” Elena said calmly. “The police response time in this district is six minutes. By the time they arrive, my helicopter will be off the roof of the adjacent building, and Maya will be on a private jet to Moscow.”

Gabriel reached into his jacket, but Elena’s two bodyguards instantly drew silenced handguns, pointing them directly at Gabriel’s chest.

“Don't be stupid, Gabriel,” Elena said softly. “I don't want to kill you. I just want my daughter.”

I looked at Gabriel. His eyes were desperate, trapped, calculating options that didn't exist.

Then, I looked at the tablet in my hand.

The general manager’s tablet didn't just control the reservation system. When Gabriel bought the Gilded Spoon three weeks ago, he had installed a state-of-the-art security grid connected directly to Vance Tower’s private defense network.

I quietly tapped three buttons on the glass screen behind my back.

[DEPLOY PRIVATE SECURITY GRID]

A loud, heavy hydraulic hiss echoed from the ceiling above.

Thick, three-inch tactical blast shutters dropped down over every single floor-to-ceiling window in the restaurant, sealing the Gilded Spoon off from the outside street in less than four seconds. The main front doors were slammed shut by heavy steel deadbolts.

Elena’s bodyguards whirled around in shock as the room was completely enclosed in reinforced steel.

“What is this?!” Elena demanded, her calm composure cracking for the first time.

“You said the police response time is six minutes,” I said, stepping out from behind the table with a cold smile. “Which means you’re trapped in here with us for the next six minutes.”

Before Elena’s bodyguards could react, the secret tactical hatch behind the bar burst open.

Marcus and six heavily armed Vance security operators swarmed the dining room, weapons raised.

“DROP YOUR WEAPONS!” Marcus shouted.

The two bodyguards realized they were hopelessly outgunned and dropped their handguns onto the floor.

Elena backed away, her face pale with rage as she looked at me. “You... you damned waitress!”

“I’m the General Manager,” I corrected calmly. “And you’re trespassing.”

Gabriel stepped forward, standing between Elena and Maya. He looked at the woman he had mourned for a decade, his eyes completely clear of the past.

“It’s over, Elena,” Gabriel said quietly. “You lost.”

The heavy steel front shutter raised three inches as the red and blue lights of fifty Chicago police cruisers illuminated the steel frame from outside. Sirens wailed through the night air as federal agents rushed the entrance with breaching tools.

Elena was cuffed by federal marshals minutes later, led out through the very doors she had tried to storm.

EPILOGUE: THE REAL EMPIRE

Six months later.

The sun was warm over the rolling green hills of the Vance estate in Lake Forest.

A large wooden gazebo sat near the edge of the lake, decorated with white flowers and silver ribbons. Guests were chatting, drinking champagne, and laughing under the clear afternoon sky.

My mother sat in the front row of white chairs, looking radiant, healthy, and completely recovered from her successful surgery.

I stood by the edge of the water, wearing a simple, elegant white dress that caught the soft breeze.

Gabriel walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

“Thinking about the Gilded Spoon?” he asked softly.

“I was thinking about crystal pitchers,” I smiled, leaning back against his chest. “It’s amazing how one broken piece of glass can change an entire life.”

“It didn't change my life,” Gabriel whispered, kissing the side of my neck. “It saved it.”

Running down the green lawn toward us was Maya.

She was holding a massive bouquet of yellow sunflowers, her dress fluttering in the wind. She stopped in front of us, her face lit up with a brilliant, breathless smile.

She looked at me, her clear, beautiful voice ringing out bright and strong across the sunny lawn:

“Cassidy! Papa! It’s time for the cake!”

May you like

I reached down, taking her small hand in mine, while Gabriel took the other.

Together, the three of us walked back toward the house—leaving the shadows of the past behind, stepping into a future that was finally, truly ours.
