Chapter 1 - Sirens and Confessions

The wail of approaching sirens cut through the morning air like a blade, shattering the suffocating silence that had settled behind the Holloway Home & Tool loading dock. Red and blue lights flashed against the gray industrial siding, reflecting in the glossy finish of Lucas’s car and the terrified, pale faces of my family.
Warren’s arrogant posture finally crumpled. The man who had ruled our family business with an iron fist and treated my life like a disposable asset suddenly looked small, his shoulders sagging beneath his expensive button-down shirt.
"You called the police?" Elaine hissed, stepping toward me with venom in her eyes. Even now, standing over a commercial dumpster where her own two-year-old granddaughter had been discarded like garbage, her priority was saving face. "Have you lost your mind? This will ruin Sadie’s competition profile! The judges are coming at noon!"
"Shut up, Elaine," Lucas snapped. His voice, usually so calm and measured, carried a cold, razor-sharp edge that made my mother recoil. He stood between us and my family, shielding Maisie and me as two paramedics rushed around the corner of the building with a medical stretcher.
The lead paramedic, a weathered woman with sharp eyes, didn’t waste time. "What did she ingest?"
"My father admitted they gave her something to sleep," I said, my voice shaking with a terrifying mix of adrenaline and frozen fury. I clutched Maisie tighter to my chest as they gently transferred her to the pediatric board. "A sedative, or something crushed into her bottle. She hasn't fully woken up since midnight."
One of the police officers who had arrived with the ambulance stepped forward, his hand resting near his holster as he looked between Warren and me. "Did someone say a confession was made?"
Warren opened his mouth, his face flushing a mottled purple. "It was a misunderstanding. The child had a cold—"
"You said you only gave her enough to sleep," I interrupted, locking eyes with my father. "Every single person by this loading door heard you."
"Officer," Tessa sobbed, clutching her forearms as mascara ran down her cheeks in black streaks. "Mom made me do it. She told me Maisie was going to steal the spotlight from Sadie's pre-judging session. She said... she said a sleeping pill from Grandma's purse would keep her out of the way."
Elaine let out a shriek of absolute betrayal. "Tessa! You ungrateful little bitch! You helped!"
"Only because you threatened to cut me off from the trust fund!" Tessa wailed, sinking onto the damp asphalt.
The police officer signaled to his partner. "Warren and Elaine Holloway, turn around and put your hands behind your back. You're being placed under arrest for child endangerment, administering a controlled substance to a minor, and reckless endangerment."

As the steel cuffs clicked around my parents' wrists, my father threw one final, venomous glare over his shoulder. "You'll regret this," he snarled. "Without Holloway Home & Tool, you and your little bastard will starve in the gutter!"
"We'll see who ends up in the gutter," I whispered, watching them get shoved into the back of the cruiser.
