Chapter 8 - The True MastermindThe deafening roar of a police cruiser engine drowned out Jason's laugh as a second and third squad car whipped into the alleyway from both directions, boxing in the black SUV with nowhere to run.

"DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"
The voice boomed through a loudspeaker, echoing off the brick walls with earth-shattering authority. It wasn't Vance's voice. It belonged to Captain Reynolds, the head of Internal Affairs, who stepped out of the lead cruiser with a tactical shotgun raised and locked dead onto Jason's chest.
Jason froze, the crowbar slipping from his numb fingers and clattering against the asphalt. He looked wildly around, realizing he was caught in a crossfire he hadn't planned for.
"Jason Miller, you are under arrest for kidnapping, assault, and the murder of Sarah Hayes," Reynolds barked, motioning for tactical officers to swarm the area.
Within seconds, Jason was slammed face-first against the hood of his SUV, heavy steel cuffs clicking onto his wrists with finality.
Captain Reynolds lowered his weapon, walking briskly over to where I stood shielding Emily. He looked down at us with a solemn, exhausted expression.
"Are you alright, Michael?" Reynolds asked, handing me a clean handkerchief for my bleeding hand.
"We're alive," I said, my voice trembling as the adrenaline finally began to drain from my veins, leaving me hollow and shaking. "Reynolds... what is under that house? What was Jason talking about?"
Reynolds sighed, running a hand down his face. "Ten years ago, before you and Sarah divorced, Sarah’s family inherited a massive digital asset ledger from an offshore tech syndicate. Millions in untraceable cryptocurrency keys, hidden inside a secure hardware drive. When Sarah wanted a divorce, she hid the drive inside the foundation of the house you two built."
My jaw dropped. "Sarah hid it?"
"She hid it," Reynolds confirmed grimly. "And when she married Jason, she thought she could use it to fund their new life. But Jason got greedy. He wanted it all for himself. When Sarah refused to give him the encryption passwords three weeks ago... he turned her house into a prison. And when Emily accidentally found the hiding spot in the basement floorboards..."
Reynolds looked down at Emily with deep sorrow in his eyes. "Jason locked her in that cage to break her spirit. And Sarah let him do it, because she was too terrified of losing her share of the fortune to stop him."
Emily buried her face in my coat, her small frame shuddering. She didn't want to hear anymore about the house, the money, or the monsters. She just wanted her dad.

"It's over, baby. We're going home," I whispered, lifting her into my arms and holding her tighter than I ever had in my entire life.
Little did I know, the nightmare wasn't over yet. Not by a long shot.
