Chapter 8 - THE RECKONINGMy mother let out a shrill, hysterical gasp, lunging forward like a cornered animal.

"You treacherous little ungrateful bitch!" she screamed, clawing the air. "After everything we gave you! After providing a roof over your head, putting food in your mouth—this is how you repay your own flesh and blood?!"

"You didn't provide for me, Mother," I replied, stepping calmly out of her reach as she stumbled toward me. "You used me. You used me as a buffer, as a scapegoat, as a second-class citizen in your little kingdom of lies. And tonight, you stood by and watched your golden boy try to cave your granddaughter's head in with an oak menu board."

My father’s face hardened, the mask of corporate diplomacy melting away to reveal the desperate, ruthless tyrant underneath. He slowly reached into the top drawer of his desk, his fingers wrapping around the grip of a heavy, brass-handled revolver.

"I should have cut you out of my life thirty years ago," my father hissed, his hand sliding the gun out of the drawer and pointing it unsteadily right at my chest. "You've always been a parasite, Evelyn. And tonight... tonight you've crossed a line you aren't coming back from."

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.

I simply looked at the barrel of the gun, and then smiled.

"You might want to check your security monitor, Dad," I said smoothly.

My father frowned, his finger trembling slightly on the trigger. "What are you talking about?"

"Senator Sterling’s cybersecurity team tapped into your home network forty minutes ago," I said, tapping my watch. "Every word you've screamed in this room tonight—including your confession about embezzling two million dollars in campaign funds—is currently being streamed in real-time to the FBI field office downtown."

A heavy, terrified silence filled the room.

From the front driveway outside, the sudden, deafening roar of sirens shattered the night air. Red and blue strobe lights began flashing wildly through the floor-to-ceiling study windows, casting chaotic patterns across the mahogany walls.

Heavy boots thundered across the front porch.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"FBI! Open up! Federal search warrant!"

My father stared at the door, paralyzed. The gun slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering uselessly against the hardwood floor. My mother collapsed into a wingback chair, burying her face in her hands as silent, broken tears finally took over.

The heavy study doors burst open. Half a dozen federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the room, their flashlights cutting through the smoke of the fireplace.

"Arthur and Martha Whitmore?" the lead agent barked, stepping forward with handcuffs ready. "You're under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and embezzlement."

As the agents hauled my parents away in handcuffs—the very same parents who had once told me not to "make a scene"—I stood in the center of the study, taking a deep, liberating breath.

The wolves were finally in cages.
