Chapter 5 - The Courthouse Siege

The Rolls-Royce flew through the city streets like a phantom, blowing through red lights and weaving through midnight traffic.

Inside the car, the silence was thick with tension. Chloe looked down at her hands, still covered in a light sheen of sweat and a smear of dirt from the rooftop brawl. She looked at Jacob, who was staring out the window, his expression unreadable.

"Jacob," she said softly. "If we do this... if we sign this verification and you get your empire back... what happens to us?"

Jacob turned to look at her. The cold, calculating corporate billionaire vanished, replaced entirely by the man who had sat with her under the cracked brick wall, listening to her problems without judgment. "Whatever you want, Chloe. If you want the divorce in ninety days, I will give it to you, along with everything I promised. But if you stay..." He paused, his gray eyes softening. "I spent three years looking for a reason to come back to the world. I didn't find it until you walked out that back door with a container of rice."

Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs. Before she could answer, Arthur slammed on the brakes.

"We're here, sir! But we've got company!"

Chloe looked out the front windshield. The steps of the municipal courthouse were illuminated by flashing amber lights. Two large, black SUVs were parked sideways across the plaza, blocking the entrance. A dozen men in tactical gear, carrying heavy batons and earpieces, were already moving toward the doors. Marcus’s cleanup crew.

"They anticipated us," Jacob growled, checking his watch. 11:58 PM. Two minutes.

"Arthur," Jacob ordered, his voice shifting back into command mode. "Ram the plaza gates. Give us a path."

"Hold on, ma'am," Arthur said politely to Chloe.

The heavy Rolls-Royce accelerated, smashing through the decorative iron gates of the courthouse plaza with a terrifying crunch of metal. The tactical guards scattered, diving out of the way as the massive vehicle tore up the concrete steps, coming to a violent halt right at the main glass entrance of the building.

"Go!" Jacob shouted.

He and Chloe burst out of the car. The guards recovered quickly, rushing toward them from both sides. Jacob intercepted the first two, throwing a brutal right hook that sent one guard crashing into the stone pillars, while using a leg sweep to drop the second.

"Chloe, run inside! Find Martha!" Jacob roared as three more guards tackled him to the ground.

Chloe didn't hesitate. She turned and kicked off her high heels, running barefoot across the cold stone and through the shattered glass doors of the courthouse lobby.

The building was dark, illuminated only by the emergency exit signs. She sprinted down the long, familiar hallway toward the records office.

"Martha!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Martha, please tell me you're still here!"

She burst into the records room. Sitting behind the glass partition, shivering with fear as she clutched a heavy metal stapler, was Martha. The computer screen in front of her was still glowing.

"You!" Martha gasped. "The girl with the... the billionaire!"

"Martha, I need you to open the hardline terminal!" Chloe gasped, slamming her hands against the glass. "Now! We have less than sixty seconds!"

"I can't!" Martha cried. "A man named Marcus Van Der Bilt called the main office! He said if I touch that terminal, I'll be fired and blacklisted!"

"Martha, look at me!" Chloe pleaded, her eyes wide with desperate sincerity. "That man out there, Jacob—he isn't a monster. He’s a good man. He’s going to save my grandmother’s life. He’s going to save thousands of people. Don't let the corrupt guys win. Please."

Martha looked at Chloe, then down at her computer screen. Her jaw set in a sudden line of bureaucratic defiance. "Screw it. I hate Marcus Van Der Bilt anyway. He denied my sister's small business loan last year."

Martha’s fingers flew across the keyboard. A heavy, industrial-grade biometric scanner on the counter suddenly whirred to life, glowing with a bright green laser.

"It’s open!" Martha yelled. "But I need both your signatures and biometric prints simultaneously!"

11:59 PM. The clock on the wall began its final countdown. Thirty seconds.

The heavy wooden doors of the records room burst open. Marcus Van Der Bilt walked in. He was an older man, his hair slicked back, wearing a multi-thousand-dollar suit that couldn't hide the rot inside him. He was holding a heavy cane with a gold eagle head, and behind him stood two armed guards.

"Move away from the counter, girl," Marcus sneered, lifting his cane. "The empire belongs to me now."
