Chapter 2 - The Art of the Trap

The tango was not a dance; it was a battleground.
Alex, who had been trained in ballroom etiquette since he was a child, expected to dominate the movement. He expected to use his height and weight to force Elena into a submissive role, to show the crowd that no matter what title she held, he was still the alpha in the room.
He was entirely mistaken.
Elena moved with a lethal, fluid precision that caught him completely off guard. With every sharp turn, every aggressive step forward, she dictated the rhythm. Her crimson gown flared around them like a wall of fire, cutting them off from the rest of the world. She spun out, her bare back arching gracefully beneath the crystal chandeliers, before snapping back into his chest with enough force to knock the wind from his lungs.
"You're stiff, Alex," she taunted openly, her voice carrying over the dramatic swell of the violins. "Is it the suit, or is it the weight of the debt your family is hiding?"
"Shut up," Alex ground out through a forced smile, hyper-aware of the flashing phones surrounding the perimeter of the floor. "The Miller family doesn't hide debt. We manage assets."
"Not anymore," Elena replied seamlessly as she executed a flawless leg wrap around his waist, forcing him to support her weight before driving him backward across the marble. "Your father took out a three-hundred-million-dollar bridge loan from an offshore entity called Aegis Holdings to fund the takeover of this estate and the surrounding ports. Do you know who owns Aegis, Alex?"
Alex’s heart skipped a beat. He stumbled slightly, a micro-flaw in his footwork that the cameras undoubtedly caught. Aegis Holdings. He had seen that name on the confidential legal briefs on his father’s desk just three days ago. His father had bragged that Aegis was a silent, desperate investor willing to hand over capital without demanding voting rights.
"No," Alex whispered, a terrible, sickening realization beginning to bloom in his gut.
"I do," Elena said, her eyes flashing with malicious delight as she spun him around, reversing their positions so that he was now backed up against the edge of the fountain in the center of the room. "I bought Aegis last month. Which means, as of midnight tonight, I don't just own half of this estate. I own your father's debt. And since he defaulted on the collateral payment at 9:00 PM this evening... I own your family's firm."
The music reached a crashing, dramatic crescendo. Elena caught Alex by the lapels of his navy suit, her face inches from his. To the crowd, it looked like a passionate, breathtaking finale to a masterclass in dance. To Alex, it felt like the cold blade of a guillotine resting against his neck.
Elena slowly released him, stepping backward with a theatrical, sweeping curtsy.
The ballroom erupted. Not out of genuine admiration, but out of fear and the desperate need to appease the new power in the room. The applause was deafening.
Vanessa rushed forward, her silver dress rustling violently, her face contorted in a mixture of rage and terror. "Alex! Tell me she's lying! Tell me this bitch is just making things up to humiliate us!"
Elena didn't even look at Vanessa. She signaled to a security guard standing near the entrance. Within seconds, two burly men in black suits walked onto the floor, bypassed Elena entirely, and stood directly in front of Alex and Vanessa.
"Mr. Miller," the lead guard said, his voice devoid of emotion. "You and your guest are requested to leave the premises immediately."
"Leave?" Alex yelled, his mask finally shattering completely. "Do you know who I am? My father built the foundation of this city's elite! You can't throw me out of a party my family partially funded!"
"Actually, he can," a new voice boomed from the top of the grand staircase.
Alex turned, his breath catching in his throat. Walking down the stairs, looking defeated, pale, and suddenly ten years older, was his father, Charles Miller. Charles wasn't wearing his usual expression of supreme arrogance; his tie was loosened, his forehead was slick with sweat, and his hands were empty.
"Father!" Alex took a step toward him, but the security guards blocked his path. "Tell them! Tell this... this waitress who we are!"

Charles Miller reached the bottom of the stairs and looked at his son, his eyes filled with a mixture of profound disappointment and absolute ruin.
"Get your things, Alex," Charles said, his voice barely a whisper. "It's over. She took it all."
