Chapter 4 - THE ALLIANCE OF THE DAMNED

The concussive blast threw Julian forward, his gun discharging harmlessly into the ceiling as he crashed onto the linoleum floor. Dust and smoke filled the room, blinding, white, and thick.

Through the gaping hole in the wall—which connected to the adjacent utility closet—stepped a figure wrapped in a heavy fire blanket. The person didn't hesitate. They lunged at Julian, kicking the pistol out of his hand and slamming a heavy metal oxygen tank directly into his jaw.

Julian groaned, his eyes rolling back as he went entirely limp.

I coughed, waving the dust away from my face, my revolver still raised. "Who's there?"

The figure threw off the fire blanket.

It was Marissa.

Her expensive blazer was torn, her perfect hair was a matted mess of drywall dust, and one of her prized acrylic nails was ripped off, leaving a bloody trail down her hand. But her eyes were burning with a feral, unadulterated rage.

"You..." I muttered, staring at her in disbelief.

"The cops he paid off tried to put a plastic bag over my head in the stairwell," Marissa gasped, her chest heaving as she spat a mouthful of dust onto Julian’s unconscious body. "They thought I was just a stupid trophy wife. I broke the nose of the first one with my heel and ran down the service chute. I heard him through the wall, Eleanor. I heard what this bastard said about me."

Harrison Vance scrambled to his feet, quickly securing Julian’s dropped gun. "Marissa, you're still under arrest for attempted murder."

"Oh, shut up, Vance!" Marissa snapped, turning her furious gaze toward me. "Look, Eleanor, I wanted your money. I hate you, and I wanted you dead. But I am nobody's cleanup crew. This psycho killed Daniel. He used me. He was going to throw me into a garbage disposal the second I signed those papers."

Arthur sat up, coughing slightly from the dust. "So, what now, Marissa? You expect us to just forgive you?"

"I expect you to be smart," Marissa said, stepping closer, her voice dropping to an intense, frantic whisper. "Julian didn't act alone. He’s part of the Syndicate—the same offshore group that bought out Daniel’s debts. They have the forged deeds already. They don't need Julian alive to execute them. In exactly twenty minutes, a automated script on their server is going to liquidate the Whitcomb Foundation and transfer the ownership of your entire real estate portfolio to a proxy corporation in Panama. If that happens, you lose everything. Even if you live, you'll be paupers."

I looked down at Julian, then back at Marissa. In business, you don't choose your partners based on affection; you choose them based on mutual survival.

"How do we stop the script, Marissa?" I asked, my voice hardening into the tone I used when executing hostile takeovers in the boardroom.

"We need to get into the main server room on the penthouse floor of the Whitcomb Tower," Marissa said, a dark, calculating smile returning to her face. "And we need Julian’s biometric thumbprint to bypass the firewall. But the building is already surrounded by his men. We can't walk out the front door."

"Good thing I own the ambulance company that services this hospital," I replied, pulling a hidden smartphone from beneath my mattress—the one Marissa didn't know about. I dialed a single, speed-dial number. "Get the transport team ready. We have a very high-profile patient to move."
