Chapter 10 - The Dawn After the StormThe red and blue flashing lights of a dozen police cruisers painted the ornate facade of the Westwood estate in harsh, shifting strokes.
Inside the grand ballroom, the party had long since dissolved into chaos. Three hundred stunned guests stood around in hushed clusters as police officers cordoned off the exits, taking statements and collecting evidence.
In the master bedroom upstairs, investigators swarmed the secret cedar panel, recovering Claire’s red Cartier jewelry box, her wedding ring, and the digital backups of financial records proving Caleb and Madison’s embezzlement and conspiracy.
On the front steps of the mansion, paramedics tended to Madison, whose legs were wrapped in burn dressings as she was handcuffed to a stretcher and loaded into the back of an ambulance. Caleb was carried out unconscious on a separate stretcher, his wrists cuffed to the rails, facing multiple charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and kidnapping.
Margaret Westwood sat alone in a gilt-edged chair in the corner of the drawing room, staring blankly at her hands, completely abandoned by the empire she had tried so desperately to protect.
Outside on the grand stone veranda, the crisp Chicago wind whipped through the autumn air.
Adrian stood at the railing, looking out toward the dark line of trees that bordered the estate.
Rachel stood nearby, holding little Emma’s hand. The little girl was clutching her stuffed rabbit, looking up at Adrian with her big gray eyes.
“Thank you, Mr. Westwood,” Rachel said softly, her voice still trembling. “For everything.”

Adrian knelt down until he was eye-level with Emma. He gently touched the top of her head, a genuine, profound peace finally settling over his features for the first time in three years.
“No, Rachel,” Adrian smiled gently, looking from the little girl back out toward the horizon where the first pale streaks of dawn were beginning to break the night sky. “Thank you for helping me find my way back home.”
