Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Showdown

🚨 FACEBOOK TRENDING HEADLINE: "My sister brought a fake baby and a forged will to probate court—but she didn't realize the judge was playing my video!"The Suffolk County Probate Court was grand, cold, and smelled of old paper and misery.
Cassandra sat at the plaintiff’s table, dressed in a conservative navy blue suit that looked completely unnatural on her. Marcus Vance sat beside her, looking arrogant and entirely in control. My mother and father sat in the front row of the gallery. My mother wouldn't look at me, but my father looked confused, completely oblivious to the horror his wife and daughter had orchestrated.
I sat at the defense table alone. I hadn't hired a lawyer.
Judge Evelyn Harper, a no-nonsense woman in her late sixties, banged her gavel. "We are here for the emergency matter of the Estate of Adam Vance... apologies, Adam Clarke. Plaintiff is requesting immediate administrative control and an eviction order for the property at 42 Louisburg Square. Mr. Vance, present your case."
Marcus stood up, adjusting his tie. "Your Honor, we have presented an updated, executed will from the deceased, recognizing his biological son, Lucas. Furthermore, we have submitted a certified DNA report from the State Medical Forensic Lab showing a 99.9% paternal match between the deceased and the child. Given the hostility of the surviving spouse, we ask for an immediate freeze on all assets and the vacation of the property to protect the child's legal estate."
Judge Harper looked down at me. "Mrs. Clarke? You are representing yourself today. Do you have a response to these documents?"
I stood up slowly. I didn't bring a briefcase. Just a single flash drive.
"Your Honor, I object to these proceedings on the grounds of total structural fraud, forgery, and..." I paused, turning around to look at my mother, who turned pale. "...and a pending capital murder investigation."
The courtroom erupted into chaotic muttering. Judge Harper slammed her gavel. "Order! Mrs. Clarke, that is a highly inflammatory claim. Do you have proof?"
"I do, Your Honor. I request permission to plug this flash drive into the courtroom media system."
Marcus stood up quickly. "Objection, Your Honor! This is a simple probate hearing. Any criminal allegations must be handled by the District Attorney’s office. This is a delaying tactic."
"Overruled, Mr. Vance," Judge Harper snapped. "If there is fraud touching this estate, I will hear it now."
The bailiff took my flash drive and plugged it in. The large monitor on the wall came to life.
First, I played Adam’s video. His voice echoed through the courtroom, explaining the extortion, the sterility, and Marcus Vance’s involvement. Cassandra began to sweat, clutching Marcus's arm.
"This proves nothing!" Marcus shouted. "A pre-recorded video cannot disprove a scientific DNA match!"
"I agree," I said calmly. "So let’s look at the DNA report Mr. Vance submitted." I pulled up the lab analysis on the screen. "If you look at Marker 12 and Marker 15 on this report, the genetic markers show a specific rare chromosomal inversion. This exact inversion is present in my family line. It is present in my father, Donald Miller."
I pointed to the gallery. My father blinked in shock.
"Mr. Vance claims this DNA belongs to my late husband, Adam. But Adam’s medical records from his cancer treatment at Dana-Farber—which I uploaded to that drive—show he did not have this genetic marker. Mr. Vance illegally swapped my husband’s forensic sample with a blood sample stolen from my father's recent lab work at the same clinic Marcus’s brother owns. The DNA on that report doesn't prove Lucas is Adam's son. It proves Lucas is related to my father—because Cassandra is his mother!"
"You b*tch!" Cassandra screamed, jumping out of her seat. "You're ruining everything!"

"But that's not the best part," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Let’s look at what happened twenty-two days ago."
I clicked the next file. The kitchen security video began to play.
