Chapter 4 - The Secrets Beneath the Floorboards

Hook: Every house has a skeleton. This one had a nursery that became a grave.

Maya and Daniel’s suburban home was supposed to be a dream house. It was a massive, modern estate surrounded by weeping willows. Now, it was wrapped in yellow crime scene tape.

While the forensic team searched the main levels, I walked down the wooden stairs into the basement. It was dark, smelling of concrete and damp earth. Daniel had converted half of it into a wine cellar and the other half into a storage room for old furniture.

I walked passed the racks of expensive wine—wines Maya was never allowed to touch during her pregnancy—and stood in the center of the room. Check the basement. What did she see down here?

I began knocking on the walls, looking for hollow spaces. Nothing. I searched the storage crates, finding old clothes, holiday decorations, and baby clothes that had never been unpacked. My heart ached at the sight of a tiny yellow onesie.

Then, I noticed the floor.

The basement floor was covered in large, slate tiles. In the far corner, underneath a heavy iron shelving unit that held old paint cans, the grout between the tiles looked slightly lighter than the rest of the room. It was fresh.

"Marcus! Bring the crowbars down here!" I shouted.

It took three officers to move the shelving unit. I didn't wait for them to pry the tiles. I took a heavy sledgehammer from the forensic kit and slammed it into the center slate. The stone shattered, revealing not solid concrete underneath, but a thick layer of plastic sheeting.

We pulled back the plastic. Beneath it was a hidden floor safe, flush with the ground.

"Do you know the combination?" Marcus asked, shining his flashlight into the hole.

"I know Daniel," I said. I dialed the numbers of his anniversary with Celeste—a date I had uncovered from his hotel receipts. 08-22.

The safe clicked open.

Inside was a metal lockbox. When I opened it, I didn't find money. I found a collection of trophies.

There were medical records of Maya’s previous miscarriages—miscarriages we had all assumed were natural. Beside them were detailed logs of the dosages Daniel had given her over the years. He hadn't just killed her this time; he had been systematically poisoning her for years to prevent her from ever carrying a child to term, ensuring he would remain the sole heir to her family's trust fund.

But at the bottom of the box lay the most horrifying piece of evidence: a small, voice-activated recorder.

I pressed play.

Maya’s voice filled the damp basement room, weak, gasping for air. “Daniel... please... call 911... I can't breathe... the baby...”

Then came Daniel’s voice, cold and entirely calm. “Just rest, Maya. It’ll all be over soon. You’ve been so tired anyway.”

The recording ended with the sound of a heart monitor flatlining in the distance. He had recorded her final moments like a trophy.
