Chapter 6 - Infiltration and Betrayal

Twelve hours later, under the cover of a torrential tropical storm, we were parked in a blacked-out surveillance van across the street from Vance Biotech’s glass skyscraper in downtown Miami.
Rain lashed against the windshield as lightning illuminated the metallic structure.
Mark was reviewing the blueprint schematics on a tactical tablet. "The master sequence is stored on a server drive in the subterranean vault, four floors below ground level. Access requires dual biometric authentication—Vance’s iris scan and a security keycode."
"How do we get in?" I asked, checking the tactical vest Mark had suited me up in.
"My team will create a diversion at the main entrance, pulling the secondary security unit to the lobby," Mark explained. "You and I will breach through the underground loading dock using the service credentials I cloned from Vance’s head of security. Once inside, we have eight minutes before the automated lockdown triggers."
"Eight minutes," I repeated. "Enough time to save my family."
"Stay focused, Charles," Mark warned. "Vance isn't just a businessman. He's a psychopath with infinite resources. Expect a trap."
At 02:00 AM, the diversion began. An explosion rocked the front lobby of the building, sending flames leaping into the rain-soaked sky. Emergency sirens wailed across the city block.
"Go! Go! Go!" Mark shouted.
We breached the rear dock, sliding under the heavy steel security shutter before it sealed shut. Moving like shadows, we navigated the dimly lit corridors of the lower basement, bypassing security cameras using a signal jammer Mark’s tech guy had deployed.
We reached the heavy blast doors of Vault B-4.
Mark connected a bypass device to the electronic panel. Numbers flickered wildly across the screen until the red light flashed green. The hydraulic locks hissed, and the massive door slowly swung open.
Inside, suspended in a cryogenic containment field, was a single, glowing blue vial labeled PROJECT GENESIS: COUNTER-AGENT.
"There it is," I breathed, stepping forward.
I reached into the containment field, carefully pulling the vial into my insulated transport case. My hands were shaking, but the relief that swept over me was overwhelming. We had it. Sarah and our child were going to live.
"Good job, little brother," Mark said behind me.
"Let's get out of here," I said, turning around.
I froze.
Mark wasn't pointing his gun toward the hallway. He was pointing it directly at my chest.
"Mark... what are you doing?" I asked, my blood running cold.
From the shadows behind Mark, a figure stepped out, clapping his hands in slow, mocking rhythm.
Julian Vance.
"Fascinating, isn't it?" Vance chuckled, stepping beside my brother. "Brotherly love. Sacrifice. Redemption. It’s almost cinematic."

"Mark... what is this?" I gasped, looking at my brother’s stone-cold face.
"I’m sorry, Charles," Mark said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "There was never a rescue mission. I didn't fake my death to protect you. I faked my death because Vance offered me fifty million dollars and a seat at the head of the table."
