Chapter 7 - The Mastermind

The room seemed to spin. The air in my lungs turned into broken glass.
"You... you betrayed us?" I choked out, looking at the man I had mourned for five years, the brother I had looked up to my entire life.
"Don't be so dramatic, Charles," Mark said callously. "You were always the soft one. The builder. The family man. You were content with your boring, predictable life in Chicago. I wanted power. I wanted wealth. Vance gave me everything I ever dreamed of."
"And Sarah?" I yelled, my eyes burning with rage. "You used her! You tortured her!"
"Sarah was an unfortunate necessity," Vance interjected smoothly, leaning against a lab table. "She was the perfect test subject. But more importantly, she was the lure. You see, Charles, human biology is unpredictable. We needed a specific genetic cross-match to complete the viral stabilization process. We knew that if we put Sarah in danger, your protective instincts would bring you right to her."
"The night in Miami..." I realized, horror dawning upon me. "It wasn't an accident..."
"Of course it wasn't," Vance laughed. "We orchestrated your business trip. We made sure you ended up in that exact bar. We even spiked her drink with a subtle aphrodisiac and hormonal booster to guarantee intimacy. You were never in control, Charles. You were a stallion in our breeding program."
Every memory, every tender moment from that night—walking barefoot on the beach, holding her in the hotel room, the lingering scent of her perfume—was instantly tainted by the cold, calculated cruelty of their manipulation.
"You monsters," I hissed, tightening my grip on the containment case.
"Hand over the vial, Charles," Mark said, stepping closer, his gun steady on my head. "The child in Sarah’s womb carries the fully synthesized cure. Once we extract the fetus and synthesize the bloodline, Vance Biotech will control the ultimate biological key on the global market. We will be gods."
"And Sarah?" I asked, tears of fury dripping down my face.
"She has served her purpose," Vance said coldly. "She dies on the operating table tonight."
A wave of pure, unadulterated rage exploded inside me. Everything I had lost, everything Sarah had suffered, the three years of stolen happiness, the life of my unborn child—it all condensed into a single moment of lethal clarity.
"No," I whispered.
"What did you say?" Mark sneered.
"I said NO!"
I didn't draw a gun. I slammed my heavy steel transport case directly into the electronic control panel of the vault’s cryogenic system.
High-voltage sparks erupted violently into the air. Alarm sirens shrieked as emergency lockdown protocols triggered automatically. Heavy steel security doors began to slam down from the ceiling.
"He's destroying the system!" Vance screamed in panic.
Mark pulled the trigger.
BANG!
A bullet grazed my shoulder, spinning me backward. But the momentum carried me under the rapidly descending blast door. I rolled hard across the concrete floor, pulling my legs through just as the two-ton steel door slammed shut with a deafening CRASH, sealing Mark and Vance inside the vault.
Through the reinforced bulletproof glass window of the door, I saw Mark screaming, firing useless rounds against the glass.
I stumbled to my feet, clutching my bleeding shoulder, the blue counter-agent vial safe in my jacket pocket.

"You're not taking my family, Mark!" I roared through the glass. "NEVER!"
I turned and sprinted through the emergency exits into the blinding storm outside.
