Chapter 10 - CheckmateThe grand oak doors of the Steel Holdings executive boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.

Inside, twelve of Seattle’s most powerful corporate elites sat around a massive mahogany conference table, murmuring in hushed tones. At the head of the table sat Julian Vance—a tall, impeccably dressed man with slicked-back blonde hair and a predatory, shark-like smile.
"Gentlemen," Julian announced smoothly, swirling a glass of amber scotch. "As regretful as the tragic accident in the northern mountains is, business must move forward. With Aldrich Steel deceased and Orion missing, I move that we dissolve the current leadership structure and—"
"I’d second that motion, Julian," a cold, resonant voice cut through the room like a razor blade.
Julian froze, his scotch glass halfway to his mouth.
The boardroom doors pushed fully open. Orion Steel strode into the room, impeccably dressed in a freshly pressed charcoal suit, his shoulders squared, his gaze fixed directly on Julian with lethal intent.
Behind him walked Ren Callaway. She wore a simple, dark trench coat, her posture immaculate, carrying an aura of quiet, deadly confidence that commanded the attention of every person in the room.
Julian’s face drained of color, his jaw slackening in absolute disbelief. "Orion... you... that's impossible. Viktor confirmed—"
"Viktor made a lot of mistakes tonight," Orion interrupted smoothly, taking his seat at the head of the table. "Chief among them was thinking he could buy a ticket into an empire he was never qualified to run."
Julian slammed his hands down on the mahogany table, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "This is a farce! You have no proof! The board votes right now—"
"The board votes on nothing," a gravelly, powerful voice echoed from the side entrance.
The private elevator doors slid open. Aldrich Steel walked into the boardroom unaided, leaning slightly on a silver-headed cane, his eyes burning with the fiery wrath of an apex predator who had just returned from the grave.
The entire boardroom gasped in unison. Several board members pushed their chairs back in sheer terror.
Julian stumbled backward, his composure entirely shattered. "Aldrich... no... you were bleeding out..."
"And I would be dead," Aldrich said, his voice echoing off the high glass windows as he walked slowly to the head of the table, standing right beside Orion. "If it hadn't been for the brilliant hands of a trauma surgeon who knows how to fix what broken men destroy."
Aldrich turned his gaze toward Ren, who gave a polite, chillingly professional nod.
"Julian Vance," Orion said, standing up slowly and resting his knuckles on the table, leaning forward into Julian's terrified face. "Conspiracy to commit murder, corporate treason, and armed assault on private property. Federal agents are waiting in the garage right now."
Before Julian could reach for the concealed pistol inside his jacket, four of Orion's armed security guards materialized behind him, their hands locking around his arms with bone-crushing force, dragging him kicking and screaming toward the elevators.
The boardroom fell into a stunned, absolute silence.
Aldrich Steel slowly sat down at the head of the table, looking around the room at the trembling board members. "Meeting adjourned," he rumbled quietly.
Within seconds, the room emptied out, leaving only Orion, Aldrich, and Ren standing beneath the glittering crystal chandelier.
Aldrich looked at Ren, a faint, approving smile touching his lips. "Dr. Callaway... it seems Steel Holdings owes you a debt that can never truly be repaid."
"Just make sure your son remembers to keep his enemies off my new property, Mr. Steel," Ren replied evenly, though a genuine smile finally broke through the rigid lines of her face.
Orion walked over to her, stopping just inches away, the intensity in his gray eyes softer now, filled with a promise that went far beyond business or survival.

"Your new property," Orion murmured softly, "comes with a permanent security detail. And a partner."
Ren looked up at him, the shadows of her past finally fading away in the glittering light of the Seattle skyline. "We'll see about that, Mr. Steel. We'll see."
