Chapter 8 - Crushed AmbitionsThe heavy-tracked snowcat shot backward out of the shed like a bat out of hell, tearing through the wooden doors into splinters and crushing the front-runner mercenary under its thick rubber tracks before he could even squeeze his trigger.

The remaining two operatives scattered in sheer terror into the snowdrifts, firing wildly as the heavy vehicle spun around in a wide, controlled drift, its steel treads churning the snow into a white hurricane.

Orion scrambled into the passenger seat, locking the cabin door just as a barrage of bullets hammered harmlessly against the thick bulletproof glass of the snowcat.

"Hold on!" Ren yelled over the deafening roar of the diesel engine, wrestling the heavy steering levers as she pointed the nose of the snowcat straight down the mountain logging trail, plowing through snowbanks two meters deep.

The vehicle bounced violently over rocks and fallen timber, hurtling down the winding mountain path at breakneck speed. Behind them, the distant silhouette of the luxury helicopter sat abandoned on the ridge, its rotor blades useless against the worsening blizzard.

Inside the cabin, Aldrich Steel let out a long, shuddering breath, his head resting securely against a rolled-up blanket on Orion's lap. The bleeding had completely stopped. His color was slowly returning from gray to a pale, living hue.

Orion looked down at his father, then turned his gaze toward Ren.

The harsh cabin light illuminated the sharp, resolute lines of her face. Her hair was messy, her jacket stained with soot and blood, but her eyes blazed with an untamed fire that completely shattered the image of the timid hermit living in the woods.

"You realize," Orion said, his voice cutting through the engine noise, "that once we hit Seattle, there's no going back to your quiet life in the mountains."

Ren kept her eyes locked on the treacherous trail ahead, her hands steady on the steering levers.

"My quiet life in the mountains just got invaded by a corporate assassination squad, Mr. Steel," she said, a sharp, dangerous smile touching her lips. "I think I have a few questions for Mr. Julian Vance myself."

Orion chuckled—a deep, resonant sound of genuine respect and burgeoning desire. He reached over, placing his hand over hers on the control lever. Ren didn't pull away.

Ahead of them, the snow-covered pine trees parted, opening up to the sweeping, glittering lights of Seattle glowing far below in the valley.

The empire was waiting. And the queen had just entered the game.
